I had mine stripped and powder coated with a flat black "crackle" finish. Came out great. Pretty cheap too.

What did you insulate with and how did you attach to firewall?

I had the same problem, defied all recommended techniques. I finally drilled out the old broken off stud. I then tapped oversize to 5/16 and used a bolt. A more elegant solution might be a helicoil.
