I went for a ride in Van's rv7a at SNF. My only other Van's ride prior was backseat in Mike Stewart's Super-8 (much fun). The rv7a ride was great. Thank you, Van's, for the offering.
Some impressions:
- On engine start, I felt like the plane shook a bit much. Reminds me of the recommendation to by Lord's engine mounts instead of the one's in Van's ff kit. Also makes me want to pay attention to any other detail which will result in engine smoothness.
- We started takeoff roll from a taxiway that was way closer to the end of the runway than the beginning. We were off in plenty. Cool!
- Same great stick response as on I experienced on my Super 8 ride. I can't wait to be flying.
- On landing, the nosewheel shimmied. Makes me glad I'm building the taildragger.
- It got dang hot in the cockpit by the time we landed. It's spring. It wasn't that hot outside even for Florida. Definitely going to check out those canopy shades.
Notes on poking around the plane:
- The wingtips I have don't flare outward as much as the demo model. Wonder why they changed the tips...
- I thought Van's sent me some extra canopy frames by mistake. You get 6; you need 4 to build the frame. Dang if the other two aren't used on the tip up canopy. I messed up a pair thinking nothing of it, so crap now I have to place an order. There are several parts in the fuse instructions which ship with the finishing kit and vice versa. Annoying.
- I noticed the rudder stops on the demo model do not match the one's that the instruction have you build. Interestingly, I had to modify my rudder stops to poke out more to properly restrict rudder swing, and my mod'd version looks more like the demo ride. I thought I had done something wrong, but I trusted the end result. I'll post a pic on my site later of what I'm talking about.
- The rudder was a one piece unit, not like the 2 piece I built. Wonder why they changed it.

Only Q I can answer is the last. When they spin tested the -7, it had
|
'marginal' recovery characteristics using the -8 tail assy/rudder. They
offered the larger -9 (2piece) rudder free for kits already shipped &
started shipping the -9 rudder with future -7 kits.
I share your pain on missing parts. I can't finish the fit of the
structure from instrument panel to firewall because of 1 missing part,
packed with finish kit. Duh...
I also wasted about an hour discovering what you did about the 'extra'
canopy frames, but fortunately I didn't trash them 1st.
Van, here's a thought: pack the fuse parts in the fuse kit & the finish
kit parts in the finish kit.

I'd guess the demo model is the "old" rudder.

That's got to be one of two parts: the "hat", or the long rib going to the
firewall. I learned -- the hard way -- that there's a reason they don't give
you the "hat." You'd be tempted to rivet it on. Bad move since it requires
the installation of nutplatest they don't tell you about and also you need
to make a hole in it, which also isn't on the plans.
I found that whenever the instructions say rivet this or rivet that where
the subpanel is concerned, DON'T.
The whole subpanel section should be in the Finishing kit instructions, not
in the fuselage kit. There's nothing to be gained by installing it at the
point in the instructions it exists in the fuselage instructions.
