I'm going to check out my Aeroelectric book, but I was wondering if there
are any thoughts out there regarding the combo toggle switch/circuit
breakers (model W31 on Stein Air's site)? Seems like a pretty simple way to
go, am I missing something?

Thanks,
Marcus

I used these switched wherever I needed a CB and a switch. They
simplify the wiring. I have a few friends using these in their RVs
without any problems. I don't think that you are missing anything.

I use one as the Avionics Master in my RV-6. 800+ hrs, no regrets.

Rob's right. I don't have any in my plane, but it would have been
great if I did. I'd consider them perfect for things like the
Landing lights, strobe lights, nav lights, and stuff like that.
They'll cost more, but when you combine a switch and breaker price
it's probably a wash. If I ever need more breaker space, that's
how I'll be getting it.

I'd also highly recommend the fuse blocks for all of your
misc. circuits. They're also on SteinAir's site. My theory on
fuses vs. circuit breakers was this:

If the item was an incidental item to flight, or highly unlikely
to ever have a fuse blow, I put it on a fuse. Things like WSI
weather, ANR power, Entertainment power, my LED Nav Lights,
Start switch, annunciator lights, and even some basic avionics
like the encoder are all on fuses. These things for the most
part should never blow unless there's a problem, and in that case
I wouldn't really care to change a fuse in flight anyway.

The reason I put some items on breakers was to be able to pull
power to something if you want to. In the case of flaps, Trim,
and Autopilot, I see this as particularly important, as you don't
want any runaway controls that you can positively un-power.

For all the others, some will fit the use of switches quite well
as mentioned above, and some might be easiest to just put on a
breaker.

That's probably more than you wanted for info, and it's all just
personal preference, but I'd encourage you to come up with a
personal logical theory that you are comfortable with and then
try to fit your items into that mold. Also, when you're planning
for circuits, give yourself room for more switches, and add
a couple of spare blank breakers and fuses. During the
final electrical wiring I found I needed a couple more than I
planned for.

I can also highly recommend B&C's 48 tab ground block. I actually
used over 48 connections so a couple terminals have more than one
ground wire on them. It does a great job of concentrating the grounds.

Marcus,
You're not missing anything. I used these exclusively on my RV-6 and am
very happy with them. I used them to eliminate the single-point-failure
prone "avionics master switch". Strategically and ergonomically placed
in logical groups, and with each avionics element on an individual
breaker, you can turn on and off the avionics almost as quickly as with
a common master switch with much improved reliability. I am planning on
using these on my RV-10. I am not familiar with the model W31 version
which Stein sells. Be sure you are getting DC rated units!! AC rated
units are available, will appear to work ok, and will pass your load
testing, etc.. but will have dramatically shortened life.
Good luck,
Dave Lammers

David that is a nice clean wiring set up, you have given me some

I drilled the standard crossmember and drilled corresponding holes in the
bus bar which is copper .125 x .5 x length. I believe I bought the copper
in 24" lengths. If additional rigidity is desired one could rivet an
aluminum angle along the bottom end of the crossmember. My panel is .090
thickness and powder coated.

One additional though on the angle. Don't put it in where it will interfere
with the throttle quadrant etc.

Whoa there guys.  There are going to have some seriously PO'd dial-up people here.  First, if you are going to send emails with pictures reduce the size!  You can get the same thing across with a 50k picture as you can with a 1MB.  Second, if you reply to an email with any kind of attachment, strip it off!  Since this morning you guys have sent over 15MB of the same pictures and I know the dial-up types are not going to be happy when they are done pulling down their email tomorrow morning.  Not to mention Matt probably won't keep the functionality for long if it keeps on being abused like this.

Look, this has been discussed before.  I personally could care less with 3MB DSL but try to have some courtesy to those that have no broadband and crummy phone lines that can only maintain 19k.  Take a second and think before you hit send.

Bob,
I am very happy with some freeware called IrfanView  (http://www.irfanview.com/).
One of the things I like best is its ability to convert and rename pictures in a batch.

I don’t know if I’d go as far as PO’d, but it took me an hour to get my e-mail tonight (on dial-up in Ecuador) because of all of those 3MB e-mails.  First of all Outlook crashed because of the size, then I couldn’t get on webmail because Outlook had crashed without logging off.  I had outlook setup to leave any big e-mails on the server, but with 18MB of pictures to download, that function crashed or something.  Anyway, I didn’t actually end up downloading the files, but I hope all copies of them were really great.

My suggestion is if you are going to send pictures, first learn about editing photos. Pictures that come of a digital camera are usually very high resolution and are very large (2480 pixels) and not ready for email or web site pictures.  A computer can not even display a picture that large. They have a resolution of up to 300 pixels (dots per inch) and again a computer screen can only display around 72 dots per inch, so high resolution pictures are good for reproducing print photos anything above 72 DPI is wasted on a computer screen. There are many photo editing software programs like Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Photo editor, that let you resize to a smaller photo and save at a lower resolution.

It'd me great if someone could shrink those pictures and resend them. Maybe
a total of 200K or something. Anybody willing to do that for me?
