I just spoke via cell phone to Lynn Matteson who completed his first leg his trip from Grass Lake Michigan to Sacramento CA area. After a 5.75 flying hours he completed about 523 miles landing at Gilbertsville KY (M34) and is tent camping at Kentucky Dam St Park. He got 22.61mpg and 4.12gph with his Jabaru 2200 Model IV. If all goes well tomorrow, next stop is Texarkana. I'll try to keep up daily reports on his progress when I can.

That's only 93mph. Did he hit some headwinds on the way?

Thanks for posting by the way. I don't know how the rest of the forum feels about it but I like coming here to read about the adventures of other kitfox enthusiasts as much as I like all the excellent technical advise. Assuming that no one else minds, please post more.

I second Wingnut's comment. It is nice to hear about what others are doing with their Kitfox's and I think is in keeping with the intent of the list.

I too really enjoy hearing about the Kitfox adventures. I think we can all learn from them, and plan better trips with the information. And help inspire those who are still building!

With Louis comments in mind, I guess a report on the Brian Ranch flight
 might be in order.

I departed Cameron Park (20 miles west of Sacramento) in my Model IV-1200 -
912UL about 0530 for Jackson/Westover about 10 minutes south to hook up with
Ken who flys a Rans S-6 - 912 ULS with a planned rendevous with Mark -
Caldwell, Idaho and Hal - Elko, Nevada at Kern Valley on the northeast edge
of Lake isabella. We arrived there at about 0900 or there abouts and had
 breakfast.

At 1030 Mark and his son Ty in a Model IV Speedster - 912L and Hal in his
Rans S-7 with a 912ulX - high compression pistons - joined us. They wanted
Lunch as they had already had breakfast but the waitress said that breakfast
folks don't like hashbrowns fried in hamburger grease so lunch would start
at 1100. Mark, Ty and Hal had breakfast number two for the day.

After some fuel we were off for Brian Ranch which is a private dirt strip
near Apple Valley, California. This time we didn't try to get permission to
cross the Edwards AFB restricted area. Last time the response was turn 90°
right immediatly. We passed to the West. We arrived at Brian Ranch just as
the skydivers were touching down about 1130, got our folding chairs out and
after an hour or so, proceeded to watch everyone else leave for the day as
the afternoon winds were picking up. We were able to see some ultralight
activity though and the most visible thing that came to my mind was the
youth of the folks in this part of aviation. Where I am used to seeing
 mostly "graybeards" this was nice.

We left soon after arriving, planning to fly South to overnight at Hal's
Aunt's place, near the Perris Valley airport and get an earlier start the
next day. We arrived there just as the Skydivers were touching down as
well, but that is not hard to do as four more groups of about 20 came down
as we were tieing down our airplanes and grabbing our gear. This place must
be Skydiver heaven as the ultimate ride to the top is a DC-9 which was
parked near where we tied down. The 20 we saw went up on a Twin Otter -
several others were tied down nearby.

The next morning, though much closer this time to Brian's Ranch we still
were not able to arrive much earlier as we were shrouded in fog at Perris
Valley and had to wait it out. I guess the locals know the routine as the
first flight of 20 skydivers were off the ground just as the fog began to
lift allowing for good drop visibiliity by the time they got to their 13,000
ft. drop altitude. At Brian's Ranch the activity was much the same as the
day before with the skydivers making two drops while we were there, but we
decided to beat the heavy winds so made an early exit, heading for the
eastern edge of California's central valley where we stopped for fuel and
 lunch at Delano.

Mark and Hal decided to follow Ken and I to the Gold Country of Northern
California and head for home early the next morning.. We bid good by to Ken
as we flew over his home base - Jackson Westover - and continued on to
Cameron Park where we spent the evening with two other Kitfox owners who
were unable to accompany us in this trip. A frank confession is due here.
With all the wind, mostly at 90° accompanying our landings and take-offs in
the desert, I was able to make my worst landing at home in calm winds - I
was all over the runway to the amusement of the two following me. I blame
it on the cross winds - lots of practice, did pretty good with them, then
when you need them the most, they abandon you.

Morning came and Hal and Mark were on their way.

Check out http://highwingllc.com for a short video clip from this trip
showing some High Desert living plus other videos of Kitfox flying. Once on
the site go to video archives.

 Luis,
I agree with you, I love to hear the adventures others are having with their
foxes, helps encourage me to make time to complete this project and get back
in the air. Otherwise it kind of sounds like we are all doing alot of work
 and little play.

I just got off the phone with Lynn. After remaining at Hondo TX yesterday
to attend the first EAA flyin of the year, he left this morning following
Hwy 10 west. He covered 527 statute miles in 6.8 hours with three stops,
landing to RON at Fabens TX, just east of El Paso. He had a relatively
smooth ride most of the way and kept his altitude around 6.5 until he got
closer to El Paso when he climbed to 10.5 to get plenty of room for the
higher ground he was encountering. I think he said the hills were around
 6.5 or so.
He received a small surprise landing at Fabens as the airport attendant had
him landing with a slight tailwind, which was no problem, but failed to tell
him that the runway had a 50' downslope. That and the tailwind caused him
to float most of the 4200' runway. Fabens is also the home of astronaut
 Frank Borman.
The ride was good for the most part and the Jabiru purred sweetly. Tomorrow
his aim is Blythe CA, but he's not sure he'll be able to make it that far.
Lynn has no "get there" pressures on him and is just taking his time,
meeting lots of people, and making plenty of stops. His spirits are
positive and he's getting plenty of rest. So far, no problems.
Total air miles to date, 2031. Total hours, 22.7.

Yesterday, Lynn made it to his destination of Auburn CA.

After departing Fabens TX at 0630mt on Monday, with 84f and a tailwind at 8.5, he arrived at Blythe CA at 1220pt, fueled up then climbed to 9k to get out of the turbulence over the mountains where he followed I-10 over the hills and into Yukka Valley where it was gusty and 94f with a direct crosswind for and uneventful landing and RON at a Super 8 motel about ½ mile down the road. After dinner at Wine ‘n Roses and a strong gin/tonic, he had a good night sleep. Total for the day was 702 miles in 7.1 flying hours. It was a good day.
Tuesday morning he was up at 0535pt and in the air not long after. He spoke to ATC who advised him to take V197 for best route to his destination. He climbed to 11.3k for a smooth ride to Delano where he gassed up, then back in the air again shortly after. During cruise his flap handle began to creep so he wedged one of his aluminum chocks in it to keep his trim steady. It didn’t work very well, but was better than nothing at all. By now he was following Hwy99 over a cloud deck at 6500 then dropped down to 4000 and into Auburn for a gusty, crosswind landing where he was met at the airport by Duane Roeb where he’ll be staying for awhile. Total miles for the day were 477 in 5.2 hours. Weather was a bit crappy, with wind, and 66 degrees, but he was happy to be there.
As for the total miles/flying hours, I’ll defer to Lynn to fill us all in on that when he gets sorted out and totals things up. Other than the flap handle thing, the trip was mechanically perfect. The Jabiru 2200 purred like a Rolex. I’m not sure what his plans are next, and suspect that Lynn isn’t sure either, but it’s nice that he has no pressures on him for the trip.
For those who haven't read all the entries, Lynn left Grass Lake MI (near Jackson), flew south through AR, to southern TX near Auburn, then west to southern CA, then up to Auburn.
 Later,

Hmmm. Considering he was heading west into a lot of headwinds, turbulence,
and weather, an overall average of close to 100mph at less than 4gph is
 pretty good in my book.

Actually, I think we are all slow. Even if we are 20mph faster. we are still slow. Now when my rv7 gets done, that will be a faster plane. The kitfox... slow, but fun. With the time constraints that I have the rv7 will be a nice addition. I'll be able to fly down to california in 5 hrs, verses 10+, that would be nice. To fly locally and fly low and slow, the kitfox will be nice and fun. I've been wanting to fly to OSH, but I just don't have the time, in the RV I'll be able to do that. So, yes he did just fine with his times, the head wind, the weather and all, he did really good. Most important, it sounded like he is having a blast. Wish I had the time to do the same.

Slow is relative and flying is an exercise in compromise (at least for those of us who can't afford an airplane for every occasion). I wouldn't want to go any faster because it would mean that I have to give up something else to do it. So for me, the Kitfox is just the right speed.

Sorry Wignut, that I offend you being able to have two airplanes. But, I don't have a new house, it was built in 1953, my truck is 7 years old, my kids are moved out. My wife likes to fly, I have a passion for flying. I don't spend my money on other things that take up the budget in other households, like boose, and cigs, or the trip to the coffee shops. I fly. I love to fly. I fly every day. My log book shows 180 flights for the year so far and over 1500 touch's. I love to fly. I don't care much for anything else, so I have funds for doing such. The rv7 will not have a glass panel, it will have minimum vfr. So, there will be more funds for affording both airplanes, after all a glass panel could cost over 20,000 way to much. I really don't think I'm showing off, I'm just liking my passion. When I get older and can't do it any more, than at least I did it when I could. have a nice day.

Good morning Listers. For those of you who have been following the cross country trip of Lynn Matteson's, he's back in the air again. Briefly, Lynn began at Grass Lake Michigan, near Jackson, flew down to Texas near Austin, then west to Blythe CA, and finally north to Auburn CA to visit with Duane Roeb where he's been on R&R for the past week or so. Except for the usual weather problems this time of year the trip was essentially uneventful and his Jabiru 2200 KF4 Speedster did it's job nicely.
Saturday morning Lynn left Auburn at 0600pt, arriving at Wendover UT approx 1100mt. Total for the leg was 4.2 hours and 487.5 air miles including a stop at Battle Mt. He had a good tailwind and used 17 gallons of fuel. Severe weather was forecast on the way so he wisely decided, rather than try to out run it, that was enough for the day and tied down with an RON at a nearby motel for a toddy and shower. Fortunately, the bad weather passed them by so no damage or problems. Just some worry.
Sunday morning (17June07) he departed Wendover at approx 0730 enroute to Brigham City UT via Promontory Pt. Lynn is a flatlander and this is some very mountainous country so he used the advice of the locals to find his way through. He only flew 1.1 hours for 131 miles before he decided to tie down for the day.
Today, his plan is to depart Brigham City about 0600 with destination Cheyenne WY. His plan was to do a lot of visiting on the way back to Grass Lake, but he has decided that he wants to just head for home. After I talk with him tonight I'll fill in on today's progress.

I wish I had checked my mail yesterday. Lynn was within 20 miles of 6 Kitfoxes while he was at Brigham. Two in Ogden, one in Brigham and three here in Logan. We could maybe put together a gaggle and lead him through the mountains. While the peaks east of Brigham would appear imposing they are easily managed and then there is nothing to slow him down.

When three of us flew to OSH in our Kitfoxes we took essentially the same route with the most intimidating part of the trip being the ascending to altitude before turning east.

Guy, we are all still gainfully employed and maybe a little anotomically challenged. As Lynn has learned and those out here know the "West" is big and the notion of a 600 mile day trip across the desert is somewhat daunting. We are more comfortable tackling 10000' mountain passes.

I am impressed that Lowell and his gaggle make the Idaho trip a couple of times each year and is planning a trip to the Utah Desert in September.
