Following the discussion last year about water in fuel, I am about to
replace one of my in line fuel filters with an Andair mini gascolator to
provide a means of trapping and draining it. Andy tells me it is not an
approved factory mod but may be a club mod. I can find no information
about this on the club web site. Do I need to obtain special permission
/ approval or can I fit it and ask my inspector to sign it off?

Richard - if you look at the PFA web-site you will find
document TL 3.07 under Engineering.
It shows mod 10178 as "Fit a gascolator" and is a "mod
approved for all of type".
So long as you are fitting the same (-ish) type of
gascolator in the same (-ish) way the you call the PFA to
ask for the details of mod 10178 to be sent to you, you
get your inspector to sign the SF9 form to say that your
aircraft is suitable, you fit the gascolator, and then the
inspector signs it off on the SF9 as having being
installed correctly, with maybe a test flight.
You then file the SF9 with your logbooks, and the PFA is
informed at the time of the next annual.

Hi Richard,
I was going to fit a mini Andair a couple of years ago, when they were all
the rage, but when I talked to Nev, he persuaded me not to bother because he
considered the twin filters was a better system, apart from the water
aspect. He suggested the Andair was more likely to block than the filters.
The only time I have ever found water in the tank is after it had been
standing out in heavy rain for several days and that amounted to less than a
thimble full in the reserve side. I assume you have the water drains fitted
to each half of you tank. I consider a fuel pressure gauge and a low
pressure warning light is the most useful equipment to warn against fuel
starvation and a blockage building up. Why not have a word with Nev before
you make up your mind?
When do you plan on returning to the WI? Perhaps we can fit in a doth
before you go.

250 hrs in and never a filter problem in G-JULZ. I echo your comments.
Please let us not criticise a system that is operating successfully in
dozens of aircraft because of a suspect installation/fuel supply.

there is one issue no one's mentioned yet; the flexible fuel pipes.
Every time the Purolators are checked the fuel lines are disturbed and
crushed. This physical abuse plus the agressive effects of some unknown
constituent in Mogas may well cause bits of elastomer to drop off the
inside of the fuel lines. I've seen it happen.
I also saw someone's fuel line suddenly start leaking seriously on the
way back from Ivalo, couple hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle.
What do they put in the fuel up there Jos?
