Can the oil pressure sending unit be located on the lower port. My new sending unit is larger diameter than the factory unti and won't fit in the regular location. Attached photos show standard location and the plug port I want to use.

oil sender is located just before the oil pump, where the oil pressure is 

the lowest in the chain. If you can, run both the original sender and the 

new sender side by side and see what the difference is.

Rob's almost right, but the standard position for the sender is right AFTER

the pump, so it'll measure higher than the lower position, which despite it

being only just below the sender, is actually at the other end of the oil

system. Between the two points are the oil cooler and filter, but the

'lower' point is the gallery supplying the bearings etc. My preference would

be to put the sender at the lower point, but this would have the sender

possibly interfering with the prop flange or other forward parts as it would

stand-out in front of the engine. If you can get a sender into the lower

point, by all means use it.

Hi Andy,



I just checked the drawings and it appears we're both wrong.. Looking at 

page 93 of the inspection and maintenance manual (drawing 9493013-1), it 

shows that oil from the oil pump goes to the 'donut' adapter, from there 

through the oil cooler, then through the oil filter, and then into the oil 

gallery. The pressure sensor sits right at the exit of the oil filter, but 

before the oil gallery.



We have a bit low oil pressure reading when the run-in oil is hot, and we 

connected a secondary sensor to the line feeding the oil cooler using a 'T' 

adapter. Pressure reads about 5 psi higher than the original sensor.

Yes, it's OK to use the lower port. I've looked at the Drawing Rob refers

to, and I think it's wrong. It's ambiguous the way it's drawn, showing the

connection through the oil pump output port, and down into the gallery, when

in fact the connection should stop at the (upper) pump output port. I'll

clarify with Jabiru and will post here if different. However, I've measured

the pressure at both points, and the lower port is definitely at a lower

pressure, consistent with it being after the cooler and filter. I note that

the drawing isn't included in the later manual version for hydraulic

lifters!

I got confirmation from Jabiru that the drawing in the manual is (at best)

misleading and the routing of the oil circuit is as I described. For those

who didn't see the earlier posts, there was confusion as to the sensing

location of the oil sender. It senses the pressure right after the pump and

in some (instrument) setups, this can show-up as pressure fluctuations on

the gauge during normal running. The lower sensing location - just

underneath the electric sender - is at the end of the oil gallery supplying

the bearings. Between those two points (despite being close together) are

the oil cooler, the oil filter and the pressure relief valve. If you want to

sense the oil pressure at the lower point, you will notice a pressure

difference of some 50kPa lower (7 psi) than the standard position, but the

lower position gives a steadier reading and reflects the pressure supplied

to the bearings before the oil returns to the case.



I've asked Jabiru to amend the drawings of the respective oil circuit

schematics in the manuals to make this clearer.

Can you clarify the second location? By "just underneath the electric 

sender" are you referring to the oil pressure switch?
