I have been on Ebay for the last week trying to buy a Garmin 196. I was finally successful yesterday, but one of the units that I was monitoring was from a pilot in Auke,Alaska. He claimed to have his fuel levels hooked up to his 196. His quote is below
"This great little GPS has been a faithful addition to the cockpit. In addition to what you know about this portable wonder, I can tell you that I had it connected to my fuel flow instrument and wired to the power bus in our airplane using the optional data/power cable, and it worked like a charm - always aware of the fuel remaining and needed for the flight to the next waypoint, and for the rest of the trip." When I queried him about it he replied - I am using a JPI FS 450 fuel flow unit - cat's meow. Has a small turbine in the sending unit that can be calibrated to just about any flow. The unit is designed to talk to GPSs.
Is any one familiar with this function or where he got the unit to do this with?

The function he's talking about is really a function of the fuel flow
meter. It has an input for *any* GPS input, not just the 196.

P.S. I own a 196... they are *very* nice for flying... so-so for
driving... not so great for boating.

Robert or anyone else'
I know you can get GPS software that alows you to use a palm pilot or
even better a laptop for a moving map. Is there also any way to interface
engine sending units?

If you mean taking "information" from a sender and having it input
into a Palm or laptop? Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm *pretty* sure
that most standard senders are sending analog signals. So, to get
them into any kind of digital device -- like a Pam or laptop -- you'd
have to have an analog-to-digital interface.
Is this what you're talking about?

I'm not really sure. Does an EIS monitoring system change analog at the
sender or at the panel?
www.deluoelectronics.com does have GPS plugins for laps & PDA's. You then
use any mapping software for a moving map.

The 196 has NEMA 0183 (??) inputs and outputs. I've been using mine on my
boat, (! ! !....Robert  hooked to my VHF radio to give lat/long
readouts on the VHF's panel. Mostly for gee-whiz, but there's a faint
possibility that it may come in handy some day. Now, if only the fishfinder
could talk/listen to it. Lar. Do not Archive.
