Attaching the wings looks like it might be a significant job on the -10.  Removing and re-installing is not something that I would look forward to.  What do listers really think the probability of removing a wing is likely to be, once the plane is finished and flying?  Currently mulling over the REAL need for electrical connectors at the wing roots.

cheers,
Ron

Having already built a -4 with the connectors, it took quite a bit more time to wire in the connectors and it made multiple points of failure.  I am building a -10 and I will not make connectors for wing removal.  I will leave an extra 6" of wire in the wing root so that if I ever have to remove the wings, I can cut the wires and add connectors at that time.   This way it will be the cheapest, lightest, and fastest solution....  If you have to remove the wings later, the last concern will be adding connectors in the wires.  You will have a better chance of connectors failing in the wings someday than having to remove the wings.

Just my opinion.

I plan on making straight runs with a service loop at the wings.  If I ever have to take them apart I can cut the loop and put in connectors at that point.

As long as it’s not too long, would a decent sized service loop allow for disconnecting the wings and “folding” them alongside the fuse?  This assumes you have the capability to get the plane on a single trailer to get out of the field…  How much length for slack would make a loop that’s not in-the-way large?

Rob,
Having had the unfortunate experience requiring removing the wings off station, I would offer you would have to make the service loop awfully large (6 feet plus??).  Otherwise you will find yourself requiring a lot more labor and gnashing of teeth trying to keep the wing root close enough to the fuselage, especially if on uneven terrain.  If you really want to avoid the connectors, I suspect a loop large enough to cut and allow adding connectors or splicing as mentioned before would be the way to go.

These were our thoughts exactly.  There’s a lot more chance of having a bad connection with two more crimps in each wire.  A solid wire will be much less likely to fail.  If/when you do take the wings off, cut the wires and make a connection then.
