G'day  all,

  

 I'm  about to order coax for the antennas.  Any recommendations on a convenient  qty?  RG400 or RG58 or other?  Config will be:

  

 Archer  navs in each wingtip

 bent  whip on bottom

 stright whip on top behind lid

 XPDR  on bottom fwd fuse

  

 Any  additional considerations on antenna placement?  I'm not familiar with the  exhaust configuration - are there any antenna locs to NOT use to avoid exhaust  outflow?  Any shadowing issues with gear legs etc ?

I'm sure others may disagree that you'd need any more than

cheap stuff, but I'm all for the RG400.  It's double

shielded, slick teflon coated, and low loss.  Probably

the best you can do.

I'm assuming this is VFR only or no ILS because  you don't mention a marker beacon antenna.  Why put an antenna on  top?  All communications will be downward except on the ground.  Our  RV-9A hasn't had any problems with comm on the bottom antenna (it only has  one).  There was a slight shadowing from the wing on testing, but a  few degrees of turn resolved it.  The plane was very close to the tower and  it worked OK, but not full strength (according to the tower).  No shadowing  from the gear known of.

  

 How about you hams?  Y'all are the  experts.

Thanks  John.  IFR - yes I neglected the Marker antenna in the wing.   Couple of reasons for the top antenna.  

  

 1.    Straight antenna has better performance than a bent  whip

 2.    Comant recommend Com1 on top of  acft

 3.    Rough strips here in Oz - any branch or other litter  thrown up during takeoff/landing could just as easily take out both belly  antennas (if you are really unlucky).

 4.    Obscuration by wings/fuse at long distance to a  fixed VHF station is minimal, therefore no real penalty for a top  mount.

  

 I am  sure others will have a different view, but I'm comfortable with my  decision.

While we're on the subject and for those  planning on ILS, where is the glideslope antennas being mounted?  I was  thinking of putting it above the windscreen, maybe glassing it into the canopy,  and running the coax down the support.  Any better suggestions or  experiences?

I'm using an archer antenna in both wingtips.  Nav2 of those will be diplexed as the GS antenna.

Not too many people actually put in the old bowtie  glideslope antenna anymore.  Save yourself the drag and just split it off  of your nav antenna or call Bob Archer and ask him to make you  one.

Serious future IFR flying...consider adding a WAAS enabled GPS to the  mix...maybe something you'll really need long term.

FWIW, I used the Comant CI-157P cat whiskers VOR/LOC/GS antenna

and with just the one cable connected in to my SL-30 I have

all functionality.  I also used the Bob Archer NAV into my

GNS-480 with just the single connector and I get VOR/LOC/GS

signals there too.

Archer OK if the station is on the opposite side from the antenna?

I had to look it up...

SL-30 Install manual page 3 - Features  * Internal RF Diplexor

Page 16:  "It's size dictates room for only one Comm Antenna

input and one NAVS antenna input.  It conforporates an internal

diplexor circuit. This means that the input VHF signal must not

strip the glideslope 330Mhz signal from the NAV 108Mhz signal.

Bold:DO NOT INSTALL AN EXTERNAL DIPLEXOR"

GNS480 Install manual page 2-43:  "The GNS 480 incorporates

an internal diplexor circuit.  <then more of the same as above>"

"...It is recommended that a single VOR/Localizer/Glideslope antenna be

used for the installation.  Most VOR/LOC-ony antennas will still

provide an adequate glideslope signal for the GNS 480 to operate

normally."

Then further....for those who only want one antenna (you WILL

lose some signal to each system if you do this):

"If two nav receivers (e.g. one GNS480 and one SL30) are

installed in the aircraft, a splitter must be used.

Installation should use an appropriate splitter, such as the

Mini-Circuits ZFSC-2-1B BNC, available as an option under the

Garmin AT part number 115-0007."

** This should not be necessary if you have 2 antennas

Looks like the SL-30 and GNS480 make things a bit simpler

to install.

Yes, it's the wingtip install.  Pretty simple.  I used it

for my #2 NAV as I trust the tail mounted (underside)

cat whiskers more, due to the shielding of the airframe

that I can tell is what you're concerned about.   Sorry, but

so far I haven't done enough approaches to say if it gets great signal

when it's shielded by the airframe.  I'll try to make it a point to

pay attention to that and let the group know.

You could probably remove the cat whiskers and replace with external 

diplexer. I have two triplexers in my Mooney, to feed two older nav coms 

each with separate glideslope receivers, all running of a single cat 

whisker antenna, reception is fine.
