Actually no, that's not exactly correct as you are mixing different things.  Matronics mail server relays list mail to all of our ISP's mail servers, where you download it, and does not host mail directly (I do email for a living among other things) so the same rules apply if you send it direct or via the list.

However you are correct that you could get it from the forum interface as an alternative but then everyone that subscribes to the email gets a copy.  Additionally, there is still a location to post files in the Matronics site so you don't have to send a large file to everyone on the list.  You can find it at http://www.matronics.com/photoshare/rv10-list.html#Top.  This isn't the quickest method but it works.  You can also use a service such as www.yousendit.com which is free and will take any file size.

Like I said before, doesn't matter to me as I have 3MB DSL.  Just want to point out there are alternatives and that even 1MB files can halt mail for someone with a flaky, slow connection as it will have to restart the download every time the connection flakes out.  Not yelling, just clarifying.  Smile

It is not too strange, The matronics server will accept it and post it to the group, and then the individual mailboxes have to download, where if you send it direct, it goes to a different server. So with that being said if it gets to the list server, you can log into the web interface and get it downloaded, even if your local mail provider will not allow attachments over 1meg. Two different servers, two different sets of rules.
Clear as mud, right?

Actually Yes, I too deal with email for a living, as I am the Director of IT at a large manufacturer and am certified in several different technologies and email programs. What you are forgetting is the archive feature of Matts servers, which makes it not just a relay but also an info store, so the copy is stored locally for retrieval from the archives, if it was not stored locally then there would be no archive. Yes I agree that it is also a relay, but we do not get the non-deliverables back from Matts server, so it is permissible that I could send a personal email to Jesse and it would get bounced because of a size limit, it is also permissible that I send to the list, it gets posted because there is not a limit, then it gets relayed to all of us, and those of us that have size limits on the server would bounce it back to Matt. In this sense it would get posted to the archive and then Jesse could log in remotely to the archive not using his email server, and not have a size limit restricting him.
This is one way to use the tools we have effectively, I also agree that there were other ways to send it, but none as clean as just sending it to him directly, which did not work, so I posted it to the group and many others have now downloaded it and stated that it would help them, so I killed many birds with one stone. End result is that I helped a builder out that is in a foreign country that did not have access to what he needed and that is what this list is for.

Remember that attachments aren't archived....and don't get delivered to
digest viewers either....they only go to the individual email
recipient list.

Other than that, it's great to help others.
