If you want to replace the windshield rather than patch it, there is a type of lexan out there which has a coating on it which makes it more scratch resistant and also more fuel and chemical resistant. Margard is the brand name of one maker, others are available. The down side is that it makes a sheet considerably more expensive, and they tend to only sell whole sheets. Possibly you could split a sheet with another constructor? Half a sheet is about right for a tailwind. Our has the windshield continuing back to the rear spar giving better visibility in turns, though we don’t have the amount of sun you may have.. Best of luck...... Mike Mears ... G-BJWT

Subject: Lexan windshield

I recently replaced my old lexan windshield with a new one and promptly spilled gas on it, etching it! I have flown it for about 40 hours now with the discoloration and now it has started to develop cracks radiating from the filler hole. I have drilled these cracks but feel a little wary. Not sure what it would be like to have a 150 mph wind in your face! What is the best way to prevent this short of being more careful and less sloppy? Has anyone addressed this problem?

Thanks for any help & suggestions

Curt, I had a similar thing to happen on N6PJ years ago. See the attachment to see how I cemented a plexiglass patch around the filler hole and painted it white. Good Louk. ... Lou Owen ... owenld(at)earthlink.net

Nice looking TW! What kind of adhesive did you use to bond the plexiglass to the Lexan? Thanks very much Lou…. ..... Curt

I thought you'd ask that and I don't really remember. That was about 15 years ago I think but it seems like it was a paste type adhesive that was touted to be for plastic. Sorry I cant do better than that.

You may try at an aquarium supply store or pet store for aquarium repair parts. It would be worth a phone call or 2 I'd say. ... DJD ..... Danny [dan42101(at)yahoo.com]
