Hi All,

I hope to be installing a supercharged M332 in the next couple of month's and have a few questions after going through the engine installation manual. The motor is still in the crate and sealed so I can't look too closely to see what I've got.

It has a 12 volt alternator, will it have an internal or external regulator and are there any other electrical pointers you can give me, I've looked at the engine installation manual but the quality of the printing is so poor I can hardly read anything.

Where do I get a starter buzzer?

For the fuel system, where do I get a "hand operated pump" or has anybody found a substitute for this.

Has anybody built their own oil tank and do you have any plans or hints for this.

I'm building a low wing aircraft, best place to see what it looks like is here http://kisbuild.onfinal18.com/

Thanks for the help

Mike

Yes, you probably need a regulator. Can’t say which type without knowing the alternator model.
Starter buzzers are advertised by Moravia – Perhaps there is one in the box with your engine ?
You most likely don’t really need an external pump. The LOM fuel pump and fuel injection system are one and the same. If it fails, an external pump is not going to help. You could use a small Facet electric pump to prime the plumbing on first start though.
You can make an oil tank or adapt one from another source. I made one from cardboard to check fit, then cut it out of soft aluminum and had it welded by an expert aluminum welder.

Good luck.

I converted the buzzer to a slick-start - starts much faster - Buzzers are about 500 bucks from Moravia in Canada. If you want mine, it is available contact me off line (bobf(at)feldtman.com (bobf(at)feldtman.com))
Ditto on the fuel pump. I do have a facet, for the purposes noted, and actually, put a line with a electrical temporary valve to prime the engine for start with the facet.
I've just encountered some problems with my LOM, huge oil usage, an engine near failure on downwind at about 1000 feet, with sever rough and loss of power thank goodness I was on a "downwind leg" as I was departing the airport, and landed fine.
We'll see what gives.

Thanks for the response.

Bob, I would like to know a bit more about the electrical temporary valve that you put in to prime the engine. A photo or general description would be appreciated. Good luck with the repairs, hope it is not as bad as it sounds.

Stephen, is the tank just a tank, if that makes any sense, the engine installation manual shows 2 drainage valves and a de-aerator which looks like a tube inside the oil tank that goes from the bottom to the top and the top end is open inside the tank and the bottom of the tube is connected to the engine. The manual is not very clear on what connects to where. What capacity did you make the tank?

Thanks again for the help

Mike

A lot of the complexity in the tank shown in the manual comes from accommodation of an inverted system. - Not something you will use much in a KIS.

Basically you will need an outlet at the bottom, a return line near the top, a vent line and a filler cap. Not much more than that. I would make it of at least 8 qts capacity, no more than 10 and plan to keep it 2/3 full.

Stephen, thanks for your quick response, where does the vent line connect to or does it just vent the tank overboard?

Thanks

It just vents overboard to allow for expansion.
