I own a III that first flew in 1990; I did not build it.

I am noting a very small leak of fuel at two points on the underside of the right wing, at the flange brackets that attach to the underside of the trailing edge of the wing and in turn attach the slotted flap. The two brackets involved are the middle one and the outboard one; two to four of the screws that appear to attach the bracket to the wing and be turned to tighten, but don't tighten up.

If any builder/owner has seen this before, or has a suggestion, please advise.

Thanks,
Robert L. Hunter

Hello Robin,

I believe so, though I am not sure of the tank layout. Capacity is 32 gals a side, and as the leak is at the bracket at the trailing edge, there must be fuel behind the spar.

Robert

Standard GIII construction calls for 1 aft fuel bay (behind the spar)
per wing. This runs from the first rib outboard of the main gear to the
rib that mounts the aileron bellcrank, and aft to the rear spar. That
being said, many builders added more aft fuel bays.

Glasair III tanks (again standard) are one tank from tip to tip, unless
your builder split the wing tanks (non-standard). That your tanks hold
64 gallons (normal is 55 plus 10 in the header) indicates that you might
have extra tankage.

The repair procedure is to locate the source of the leak (the blue dye
stains will help), drain the wing of fuel, clean the area with acetone,
attach your shop vac to the wing, draw about 30 inches of vacuum (as
measured with a water manometer) on the tank, and dab some vinyl ester
resin (DO NOT USE EPOXY) on the areas that are leaking. Keep the vacuum
applied for at least 30-40 minutes after you apply the resin. The vacuum
in the wing should draw the resin into the leak. Let cure for 24 hours
before you add fuel again.
