I'm having a hard time finding any Loctite 515, as specified in the TCM
SIL99-2B document to seal my crankcase halves (A-65). Since this is
going in a Pietenpol, I guess I don't have to use exactly what they
specify, but I was wondering what others have used with success, besides
the Permatex #3 Aviation/Loctite 515/silk thread to seal their crankcase
halves.

Ben,

Loctite also owns Permatex so there are a few things you can use. For
direct cross loctite 515 to Permatex's version 51531.

I like using the 518 (Permatex 51813) as it is slightly thicker and
compensates for older cases that someone used a screwdriver to separate
and heat induced case pucker between bolt holes.

Use the silk thread as well and the materials sparingly.

Since motorcycles and boat motors are assembled in similar fashion,
they all have their own "brands" as well, but I have been using the 518
successfully for many years.

Another manufacturer is Hernon and they should have a cross reference
sheet. they may be harder to come by.

A Google search will turn up supply houses for any of the above.

Good Luck on your project.

do not archive

Hey Ben:

Here's a place to order if you want it:

http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=1654570&PMT4NO=76906963

We've used it lately on a O-200 and a C-145. No oil leaks and we were
advised to skip the silk thread which we did. Also used it to seal the
flange of a E-185 scavange oil pump against the accessory case. Haven't
test run yet, but we're hoping for good news.

Best Regards,

Randy, Las Vegas

You can get Loctite 515 at McMaster Carr. Various sizes C from $5.37 for 0.2 oz tp $70 for 10.1 oz.
