Hello Mike, Here is my recommendation:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/jeffcotank.php

Please let me know if you go that way and I'll try to dig up some
application info for you.

I used the Jeffco stuff in aircraft spruce. I squeeged in on then painted on two coats The factory airplanes just squeeged on normal epoxy. If I did it again I'd probably just use the normal epoxy and really work it in with a squeege. Maybe add a little flox. The jeffco stuff does make the insides of the tanks look nice through the fuel cap.

Is epoxy impervious to avgas, or is Jeffco better? Can Jeffco be somehow applied over epoxy in sealed tanks (sloshed maybe)?

Are you talking about sealing the tanks before closing the wings or sloshing them after they're closed?

Jeffco advertises that it's impervious to avgas. I doubt the epoxy makers would vow to that.

When I was at Scaled they had done tests of epoxy laminates that had been sitting in jars of 100LL for years. The final test was at 10 years if I remember right and there was no reduction in properties.  Of course all epoxies are not excatly the same, but it bodes well.

Ethanol in Mogas is a disatster though.

Hi

I'm thinking of cutting a hole in each bay and then resealing from the inside and then repairing the hole again.

The reference that OC gave

http://wiki.velocityxl.com/index.php?title=Jeffco_Fuel_Tank_Sealer

says

"Do not apply over old epoxies or other previously applied coatings. "

I cannot get hold of Jeffco, there is no Jeffco website and the phone number that is listed in the yellow pages is non existent. so if anybody has a number for Jeffco I would appreciate it

Thanks

Mike

Thanks Bill,

I have now tracked them down, they have been taken over by Rhino products and are distributed by Composites One which means you cannot get hold of anybody that knows anything, I've submitted a question on-line so will see what they say.

Thanks for the help

Hello Mike, You quoted: "Do not apply over old epoxies or other previously
applied coatings. "

I think that you have to view that as written by some lawyer. Obviously, if
there is a primer or base coating on the substrate that is not properly
adhered then any further coating will also be not be properly adhered to the
substrate.

Realize that our KIS moldings have been made from pre impregnated (with
epoxy) fiber glass. So all of us that have successfully used Jeffco 9700 FCR
on the interior of our wing fuel tanks have, in effect, applied the Jeffco
9700 FCR over a previously applied coating.

Some of us have even applied additional laminating resin over the interior
surface before applying the Jeffco 9700 FCR.

'OC' Says: "The best investment we can make is the effort to gather and
understand knowledge."

Hi All,

Found my leak to-day quite by accident. In desperation I covered the entire
wing with dishwashing liquid where I thought the leak could be (that should
give you a clue). Nothing.

While I was hosing the wing down to get rid of the soap I noticed bubbles at
the end of the front spar, 4 inches from the tank. Air was travelling
through the foam core of the spar and exiting at the end.

The question now is do I open the tank and re-coat it inside or do I live
with gas soaked foam in the spar, all comments will be appreciated. My
initial feeling is to live with the situation as the major surgery involved
to cut each bay open and reclose it may be worse

Thanks for the help

Mike

Mike,

If you look on my website you will find that I had the exact same problem with my wing when I was checking for leaks. I have some photos of the bubbles at the end of the rear spar section. I cleaned out the corner from the end of the spar back to the rib. I also dug back into the point of junction between rib and spar. I sanded and cleaned the entire area and then filled and coated everything with Jeffco 9700 including the rib face and rear spar facing. As far as I can determine the leaks have all been closed now.

Thanks for all the help. I hollowed out the foam core in the front rib as far as I could and filled it with flox and put negative pressure on the tank. That cured the problem, held the vacuum for more than 3 days.

I decided not to open the tank to look for the place where it leaks into the spar on the inside of the tank

Regards

Mike
