A heads up to check the tightness of your battery box attach bolts, if
firewall mounted.

I was installing a new battery in our Glasair last week. Years ago
another homebuilder gave me a good piece of advice. He said, "You can't
tell if something is loose by looking at it. You have to touch it." So
before putting the new battery in the firewall mounted tray, I grabbed
the tray and tried to move it. To my amazement, it moved. Quite a lot.

Long story short, all 8 bolts (4 per side) where two full turns loose!
This is the improved firewall that had factory supplied hard wood
mounts in the firewall. (We did ours per a Service Bulletin that came
out when the new GII came out.) I suppose the wood must have shrunk,
probably due to firewall heat?

Time in service: 3000 hours. We do not do aerobatics.

Hope this helps,

Mike Palmer <><

I finally got around to making my own canopy gas strut recharge
fixture. It cost me about $40 in parts. (Now I'm wondering how much S/H
gets for these?) ACE hardware had most of the parts - a gas line pipe
(long enough to do two struts at once is best); reducers, a Schrader
valve, sleeve. I bought a 2000 psi rated ball valve for about $15 from
Grainger Industrial. (We have a local outlet nearby.)

Start the nitrogen flowing with the ball valve cracked open to purge
air out of the tube. Then close the valve and charge up to 750 psi.

Wait a minute, turn off the nitrogen and slowly crack the ball valve.
That's it. You'll have to do it again in a few years, but we've got 15
years on our plane. Had to do this about 3 or 4 times now on one strut
(only once or twice on the other.)

Our local FBO didn't charge me for the 5 minutes and the little
nitrogen it took.

I'll plan to post photos on my website soon.

Hope this helps,

Mike Palmer <><
