I have seen no postings in quite a while.

My plane now has 39.8 hours on the 40 hour test program. Waiting till after a visit to relatives to get the pitot-static redone, then will finish the test program.

Hi Bill,

How has your Rotary been performing so far? Any water/oil cooling problems?

A friend of mine is building a Prescott Pusher with a rotary engine.

Hope you have continued success.

Maybe Scott will give us an update on his progress with fixing fuel leaks.

Merry Christmas,

Tim (TR-1)

NICE!

My wife and I are on a 35 day trip from Houston, TX - Meridian, MS - Brunswick, GA - Tampa, FL - Miami, FL - Aguadilla, PR and back. We are in Puerto Rico right now and start our return flight(s) to the cold weather tomorrow. We expect to be back in Houston on December 26th.

The weather has been AWESOME here in Puerto Rico and SN4052 has flown without any problems. I had to change out the 9yo battery when in Tampa since it finally quit after nursing it for the last year. The autopilot has been intermittent for the entire trip. These have been the only issues during the entire time. Up to now we have flown 24.3hrs and over 2900NM since we started.

We have flown IFR every leg so you can see where we have flown on FLIGHTAWARE.COM under tail number N819PR or you can go to our web page (puertoricoflyer.com) and click on "Where are we now" and you can follow our SPOT GPS Tracker when we depart tomorrow in real time.

I will update you when we are back in Houston.

Hello Bill, Thanks for the report. I am still out here -- things are going
fine.

I bought $500 worth of Gerbing's electrically heated clothing in order to
fly my plane in a bit colder weather (35 degrees F instead of 40 degrees F).

http://gerbing.com/

I had never put any engine source heat in my plane (too crowded under the
engine cowling) and the little electrical heater that I tried was useless.

I have a bit over 360 hours on it now -- that is hours wherein the engine
was operating at greater than 1,500 RPM instead of any clock or Hobbs meter
time. I figure that I lose about 15 minutes per hour on the average using
that method, but whose counting?

If this link will work the October 2010 issue of Aviation Safety Magazine
had a good article on pitot / static checks.

Copied below are my comments on the article:

Hello Jeb Burnside,

My congratulations and appreciation for the superb article by Larry
Anglisano on Pitot/Static Checks in the October 2010 issue of Aviation
Safety magazine. I would like to make some additional comments on this
subject:

1) It is unfortunate that the tests required by CFR 14 Parts 91.411 and
91.413 have become commonly known as "pitot / static checks". Maybe someone
can come up with a better term that is more accurately descriptive. That
term is significantly misleading because:

a. As the article points out, while highly desirable and frequently
performed, the FARs do not require a pitot system test.

b. The term does not contain the word "transponder" yet every aircraft
flying VFR in the extensive airspace specified in Part 91.215 is required
to be operating a transponder that has been tested in accordance with Part
91.413.

2) Most of the tests required by Parts 91.411 and 91.413 must be performed
by specifically qualified organizations or technicians using special test
equipment. But a static pressure system test required by Part 91.411 (2) and
described in Appendix E to Part 43 (a) may be performed by a certificated
airframe mechanic as permitted by Part 91.411 (b) (3). The acceptance
criteria for the static pressure system test is found in Parts 23.1325 (for
non transport category airplanes).

3) To clarify, where the article states: "--where opening and closing of the
(static pressure system) occurs -- also requires recertification." that
recertification could consist of just the static pressure system test
described in Appendix E to Part 43 (a) performed by a certificated airframe
mechanic.

4) The FARs do not require a pitot tube / system heater to be checked, but
Appendix E to Part 43 (a) (3) does require that the static port heater, if
installed, be checked for operation. Every technician that I have observed
performing the Part 91.411 tests has also checked the pitot heater, if
installed, for operation.

Again my congratulations on a superb article.

effort to gather and understand knowledge."

PS: While on some occasions I feel slightly cheated when I find duplicated
material in the Belvoir Aviation Group publications (I subscribe to several)
in this case I recommend that this same article be published in the Light
Plane Maintenance magazine. Thanks.

Hello Galin, Thanks for the report. A couple of questions if I may. You
wrote:

1) "I had to change out the 9yo battery ...."

What brand, kind, and size of battery?

2) "The autopilot has been intermittent for the entire trip."

What kind of autopilot?

Thanks,
