Does anyone know of an RV3 flying with the O235L2C (or any for that =
matter)? I am on the verge of going this route but one person, an IA =
that specializes in Grummans, told me he doesn't like these engines, =
primarily because they have solid lifters. He didn't mention any other =
specifics, just a general dislike for these engines. Is he correct and =
what is the general consensus of this group?

The L2C has a 2400 TBO. This engine was designed for the newer fuels;
however, if you do an extended dead stick landing, then the no power
approach will result in foiling the lower plugs.

The are numerous publications reference the lifters and they should be
consulted as to the pros and cons.

I own/fly the O-235 L2C engine.

The last RV-3 that Van's had flying, which is now mothballed in Van's home
hangar, had an O-235 installed. They took that engine out to put in the
RV-9A prototype. Don't know about the solid lifters but that should be easy
to find out.

Hi Randy,
The very first RV I flew was an 0-235 powered RV3. It had a very small battery and photoelectric cell charging system, no starter and very basic panel and flew better than my current 170 HP RV4. 0-235's can be bought for under 5-7K low time ready to fly and can run autogas. The bottom line is weight, they weigh 50 lb's less than an 0-320. With the proper flow benching, sparrow-hawk pistons (115 HP) and a good prop you would have a very fuel efficient, lightweight fun airplane for high gas price economy...

my 2 cents...

Great response - I assume that everyone likes this engine because there =
were no negatives posted. Those of you that flew behind this engine: =
how often do the valves need to be adjusted and how much work is it?

Jan, I think the Lycoming book requires the valves to be adjusted every 250 hours. The reason they went with solid lifters was the same reason the racecar guys all have solid lifters, power response. BTW, all BMW's used to have solid lifters (some still do) it's not that big of a deal to keep them adjusted and actually adds performance.

See ya!

I haven't gotten that far Mario - maybe someone else can help. Van's =
sells this engine (for $21,000) so maybe they know.

I have seen longezes fly - I want better performance than that: 2000 ft =
ground roll and 200 fpm climb. <G>

Jim,

You're kidding, right? I'm from Alabama but even I know that comparing Long Ez's to RV's in performance is like comparing the F16 I fly for a living to your Harmon Rocket...totally different.
LongEZ's hug the ground and climb poorly because of their wing/canard, not their prop...
Craig makes props for ALL experimental applications, he just got famous building LongEZ props. In fact, one of his props is on the USAF Predator drone prototype. He is revered in the EZ community as several EZ's have had parts fall off inflight and go through his prop with little damage and all flew home. I doubt many wood props would survive and even a Hartzell might be challenged. I only recommended his product as I have extensive experience with it on several RV's, period.

Craigs props run smooth, are strong and reasonably priced, and he guarantees their performance. What more can you ask for?

No worries Jim, you never know who you're dealing with out there these days people wise...I had a guy who owned an RV for sale last week tell me about it's laminar flow wing design "Like a Mooney"...hmmm.
Anyway, I own an RV4 and 1/2 of an RV-6(under const). I have put 1400 hours on the 4 in 10 years. I started out in RV's flying an RV3...I want another one...good luck with the 0-235 powered version, the one I flew was set up that way and flew great.

see ya!
