I have sent a text to Jerry Savage who lives in Rangiora but I have not had a reply. I'm sure he will be okay out there but I don't want to post anything to the group as yet. I imagine the network is jammed.

Hi Bob,

Centered about 20 km SE of Christchurch. Major devastation in Christchurch and the port of Lyttleton. Magnitude 6.3 which is less than the earlier quake, but it was much closer and shallow. It occurred close to 1pm so lots of people around and in buildings. Death toll 65 and rising.

Wall to wall TV news presently but of course most people in Christchurch are not able to see what is happening because power is off. Huge infrastructure and building damage.

We felt nothing here and it is quite draining watching it unfold on TV, but not being in a position to help.

The energy from a shallow focus quake goes up as inverse square. When one with 2.5 mi depth hits at 6.3, it can be devastating. Most here in Calif, we usually have strike/slip quakes as opposed to thrust quakes which release more energy. And ours usually are 10-20 mi deep so effects on surface are lower. We are anticipating a Big One on the San Andreas fault about 10 mi from my home. I just hope it stays away until I go to the airport in the sky.
I feel for the folks in Christchurch.
