The only thing the aluminum is useful for is protection of the fiberfrax from liquids. The melting point of aluminum is way below the >2000 F expected from a fire. So if there is a fire, this will happen: hole is melted in the aluminum, fiberfrax does not protect anything, resin is burned out from composite sheet of fuselage, toxic smoke enters the cabin. I have watched a lot of firewall burn tests, they are nasty even if performed outside. Direct exposure to the smoke in the cockpit must be avoided. The only way is a sealed firewall.

A steel sheet protects from burn-through, fiberfrax provides some insulation to keep the temperature of the composite bulkead low enough to prevent it smoking, at least for a while.

Ya, that's what I'm hearing now. I wonder if there are any link on Youtube to see some of these tests? Would make a compelling argument for changing to SS at the next opportunity!

Thanks for your expertise!

The tests we did were for Cessna. We did take videos, but they are not posted for the public.
