Do you have an idea what caused the old oil cooler to fail?

Just wanted to close the loop on this and say that 623JF is home and safe with her new oil cooler. Thanks to Bill Kulpa for providing the ride up there in his Centurion and assisting with the repairs.

Pulsar people are simply the best!

John Sondgeroth in NY had the exact Earl's unit I needed and has graciously sent it my direction. Rhonda keeps saying she can't believe how helpful Pulsar people and pilots are in general. I found a gentleman with available hangar space in Searcy, AR who offered to keep the plane there and gave us full use of the facilities, tools and even his pickup.

Thanks again to all who offered to assist and again to John for parting with the piece I needed. Looks like I'll be back in the air in a few days.

Subject: Searching for Earl's oil cooler
I had to abandon my plane in Searcy, AR and drive home because we could not repair the oil cooler after the "welder" destroyed it. We tried bypassing the cooler but oil temps ran too high on a short test flight even at a very light power setting (it was 111 degrees outside!).

Thanks to several of you who responded to my pleas for help. I'm looking for an Earl's 61002 (dimensions below) which is apparently no longer in production. If you have that cooler and would be willing to part with it (permanently), please let me know. Next steps include contacting Earl's to see if they know if any of their distributors or resellers have one on the shelf. Failing there, it looks like their # 210 00 could be adapted to work with a 2.5" mounting extension, though the cooling area would be only 61.5% of the original one.

Thanks again for all offers of assistance.

I'm broken down in Searcy, AR and need help figuring out which Earl's oil cooler I have. The oil cooler developed a leak where one of the fittings goes in. I had a local guy (highly recommended) weld it and it looks like a dirt daubers nest now with several leaks and pinholes. I'm trying JB-Weld but as a backup, if I have to get a new cooler sent in, I need to know the Earl's part number. If any of you have the one supplied by Skystar and could give me the part number, I would be most appreciative.

Mine is dimensioned as follows:

Fitting centers 7.5"

Height 3"

Body width at the widest points 10.75"

Face width (b/t the tanks) 6.5"

Thickness 2"

Rows 8

Thanks for any help.

Yes, I do. The forward hose from the cooler runs back to the oil tank which on my plane is mounted on the pilot side firewall engine truss mount. That 20" hose had the ability to possibly vibrate and/or exert an aft pull on the fitting where it attached to the cooler which likely contributed to metal fatigue. See this picture for "a picture is worth a thousand words."

I will create some type of bracket with an Adel clamp to support the hose at its midpoint and tie it in solidly with one of the intake manifold bolts.

That’s good to know. My arrangement is very similar. Thanks.
