It's time once again to replace the main tires on the Pulsar. Seems like I have to do this every 160 - 200 hours. I have 5x5 on the mains and tried different brand tires to see what lasts the longest. I haven't tried the Michelin yet because of the cost and was wondering if anyone else has. At this point it's worth it to pay more if I don't have to change them so often. Any experience with these tires?

Thanks,
Barry Norman

Barry, I have the Michelins and love them. They do last a long time but you pay more for them. I will be replacing them soon, and I am looking at some new tires from Dresser. They are less than half the price of the Michelins so it will be an experiment. Michelins are great tires, put them on and forget about them.

There was one of the regular EAA Webinars several months ago by Mike Busch covering tires in detail..all the main brands (not Lamb) all the unique manufacturer’s design features...the criticality of maintaining correct pressures etc....Michelins generally came out on top for new tires both in price and performance, but my recollection is that he was recommending retreads (Dresser I think) for most of his gaggle of Cessna, Piper and Cirrus managed GA aircraft. Better wear and better value. Might be worth looking at the Webinar archives?

Barry,

I'm on my 4th set of tires now. Instead of tracking wear according to hours, I track by landings. The first pair lasted only 88 landings but included the taxi testing prior to first flight. I replaced with Airhawk 6-ply and got 311 landings out of that pair. I then tried Airhawk 10-ply and got 195 landings. The 10-ply were heavier and felt much harder during ground operations and wore much faster for some reason. For the current pair, I went back to Airhawk 6-ply and currently have 153 landings with about half the tread remaining.

Throughout the plane's life, I have experimented with camber and toe-in spacers trying to even up tire wear. I have been using 0 degrees camber and 1 degree toe-out spacers with this pair and current wear indicates the inner half of the tread is wearing faster than the outer half. I will reverse the tires on the rims during annual next month.

My 1 degree toe-out spacers do not set the tires to a toe-out position with respect to the plane, they just decrease the toe-in built in to the landing gear.

Hi,

I installed dressers some time ago. I have 0 landings on those and I am looking forward to start to collect # of landings with those. Wings are sanded, I added reinforcement (18" x 3") under wings and currently playing with bondo. It is coming together slowly!

And I am installing TruTrack ADI II Series Autopilot as well.

I have the same auto pilot in my XP.  I think of it as a copilot that allows me to spend more time watching for traffic and do a better job of managing overall flight operations. I have the large wheel option with Lamb tires. The original tires are approaching 500 total landings. I have Azusa drum brakes with Sonex heavy wall drums. I attribute long life of tires being related to good wheel alignment and low available breaking energy for stopping the aircraft. If it were not for the retrofit rework involved, I would go to hydraulic brakes. Good luck with your up coming flight operations.
