I am about to purchase the engine for my Pulsar III and thought I'd poll the combined intelligence of this group before moving forward.

The choices for me are either a Rotax 912ULiS or Jabiru 3300 but I also need a fire wall forward kit. I asked Lockwood for a FWF kit and they seem to only have the engine.

So, question one is between the Rotax and the Jabiru. Each has advantages and a disadvantages, some of which depends on your point of view, but the biggest question is about reliability. A browse of the internet indicates that some folks are having reliability issues with the Jabiru but posts on this site say otherwise. I would appreciate hearing from the Jabiru crowd about any maintenance issues with the 3300, or perhaps good things to say about it. The 912ULiS is new so there is a concern about how reliable it will be and whether Rotax has worked out all the bugs.

The second question is about sources, who sells engines with fire wall forward kits? Apparently Lockwood doesn't. Jabiru has the FWF kit so that's another plus in their favor.

Best Regards, Bill

I have the 912S on my Pulsar III and haven't had any problems. Overall I get decent performance and great fuel burn. Downside is they are more complex than the Jabiru and getting a firewall forward for the Pulsar III with the Rotax will be a challenge. Maybe someone has one they are willing to part with or make a mold for you.

I have a Pulsar III with the 2200 Jabiru. There are about 14hrs on it in testing. I have the AeroInjector with Lightspeed ignition. With my particular setup I am seeing 140mph cruise which is fine because I fly Light Sport anyway. I have the ground adjustable Sensenich composite prop at 62". I am seeing consistent 2950 rpm at take of with the prop NOT being unloaded. At unload I see 3200 which is right in the power band of the engine. I and two other friends have been flying Jabiru's for about 5 yrs. The first one I had was also a 2200 and did not experience any problems with the engine. I did experience some premature cracking on the boot for the carburetor but other than that trouble free. The bis secret to the Jabiru is following the manufacturer';s instructions to the letter and of course normal maintenance. It is smooth running engine with low fuel consumption per horsepower. I am experiencing 3 1/2 to 4 gall per hour depending on my mixture setting. My tow buddies had the 3300 in Highlanders and experienced the same results as I did. Love the engine. Cooling is the first and foremost consideration. Once that is done, and we have pics, all is good. I can taxi my Pulsar for several laps around the airport and NOT have any issues with cooling. Hope this helps. Also Jabiru does supply a firewall forward kit for the Pulsar. Bear in mind that to make sure the cowl is for the Jabiru 3300 install. Mine was 2 1/4" too short, so mad time was upon me. Cheers, Larry

William, i'm a owner of a pulsar sp 100 and having a UL Power engine installed in my plane. Your right about havine a FWF kit for your engine choice. Having a mount made cost about $600 and cowling $800 . Your plane would do very well with the 260iS ( 108 HP), it's only 160 lbs/elec ign, fuel injected , and close to what you would pay for the other engines.

Bill,
The only FWF package deal will be the Jabiru which will save a lot of grey hairs, I hear they have sorted thier problems out now, when I was looking they were haveing major problems with dropping valves etc a few planes were written off in South Africa. The Rotax is a good motor but I don't think it will be a walk in the park putting a FWF kit together, unless someone has a kit lying in thier garage, I made my own Ring engine mount and moulded my own cowl for the 912ul, I designed a La Presti style cowl unfortunately I scrapped the moulds[not to be repeated again] when I sold the plane.
Can send some pix if required.

Keith

PS I have a new Rotax 582 engine mount in the garage

That’s a bit of a trip for me.

If you decide on the Jab I can send you some pics off line of my setup.

I have the 3300 s/n 18 in my III. Been flying it for 13 years. I used the first Pulsar to 2200 cowl sent to the states to make the cowl for my 3300. Roby Grove designed and built the engine mount.
