Sounds great. I was the first to complete and warned Stoddard Hamilton of a potential C.G. problem. They had a professional weight the plane and decided to convert to the Super 2S. One poor builder phoned me in 1991 to say that he just completed a RG 2S and had a stall speed of 90MPH!!! Having a full panel with two radios, a 200HP engine and a constant speed prop saved my butt. My CD fell within limits. Later removing the heavy lacquer primer and Centuri paint in 1996 made a big difference. After I removed all the paint I swept it into a bag and weighed it and was surprised to see it weighed around forty five pounds. I even sanded down the gell coat to a thinner thickness.  Plus I put the plane on a diet by installing lighter upholstery and hard ware were ever I could. I installed a far lighter battery and starter motor that saved a lot of weight. Doing that dropped the empty weight from 1415 pounds to a little over 1325 and moved the CG forward. I understand when a heavy paint is used it adds weight to the aft.

Hi Chuck,

That's really funny that you contacted me about this because when I was guesstimating where my CG would fall using the 6cyl 220 Franklin engine, someone gave me your W&B numbers for your fixed Tri-gear. 1275 #'s EW if I recall.

To answer your question, my 2STD CG ended up being right on the dot. See the attached.

I thought that the airplane would be nose heavy from the 6 cyl engine so I moved it as aft as I could and used a 29# Whirlwind 151 CS prop. Battery on the FW. I have the Super II horizontal and I moved my wing aft. SL 30, transponder, audio panel, Trio Pro, AFS 4500 panel. Full conformal foam (heavy) upholstery, floorboards in baggage (makes it flat).

I built it as an FT with all the hardpoints and FW beefing for the nose gear trunnion. And then I got over all the fear-mongering re the TD (always my first choice) and found some Grove aluminum TD gear in Barnstormers for a song and converted.

I weighed control surfaces before and after painting with Southern Polyurethane single stage white, topped with clear and the difference was just a few ounces. I can't imagine paint on the whole plane amounting to more than 15#'s or so.

Hope this helps.

Best,
John
