Hi all
When I did a mag check this morning the no 2 mag was completely dead ie. Engine stop running on only mag no2.
I flew two days before and there were no indication of any problems.
We checked the grounding from the switch all good checked the points are opening and closing.
Any idea where I can look for the problem?

Did you check the high voltage wick that sticks up into the distributor
cap? Many times they are cracked and as soon as the coil fires, it goes
directly to ground because of the crack in the high voltage wick. Try
removing the wick and examine it very carefully. Look for carbon traces
to ground around the hole. They are not too pricey. So you may want to
just replace it anyway. I am pretty sure Doug has new ones. If not,
Jill at M14P has them. They are the same for the M14 M9F or M9-35 mags
as they are for the Housai mags.

Dennis already very correctly pointed out the "cigarette" as it is
sometimes called. Remove it. Inspect it. Replace it just to be safe.
You said the points open and close. Recommend you be slightly more
detailed than that. I have had the point arm crack (basic metal
fatigue) and yes ... they were opening and closing, but the gap was ALL
wrong. So check the point gap and make sure it is set correctly.

Along the same lines, connect a mag buzzer box and make sure that both
mags are timed close to the same value. These mags have internal GEARS
that have been known to have the teeth wear down and then jump a tooth
or two. This will throw one mag so totally out of time to where it will
not fire the cylinder at all.

If the mag is in time, (checked with mag "buzzer box" timing tool) the
points are set correctly, and the high tension extender (cigarette) is
not damaged and you are sure that there is NO GROUND on the P lead when
the mag switch is turned on, then it is most likely an internal mag coil
failure.

I forgot to mention a few more things:

Before you give up and decide the coil is bad, take a very careful look
at the mag rotor and cap.

On the rotor:

1. Make sure it has both metal points showing. I.E. On the rotor make
sure the little metal tabs that strike the cap as it rotates are intact
and not broken off in any way. Rare, but it can happen and it is very
easy to miss. Only one of them is used on the #2 mag, but heck, just
check them both.

2. Make sure the rotor itself is not LOOSE where it is screwed into the
mag. It has three screws that hold it down tight. Make sure those
screws did not come loose so that the entire rotor itself shifted.

On the Cap:

Check for electrical continuity from where the cigarette sticks up into
it, over to the carbon point in the middle that in turn makes contact
with the rotor itself. Again, this is an extremely rare thing to fail,
but if you tear the whole mag apart to replace a very expensive mag
coil, only to find out you had a cheap mag cap failure, you'll be upset!
And it is easy to check.

The above stuff is so rare to ever fail, I forgot to even think of
telling you to check it, so don't hold out that it will be this easy,
but hey... some people get lucky! Not me, but hopefully you.

Mark

p.s. If all else fails, and you take the mag out of the engine, hold
onto the top of the cigarette (under the cap) and have someone give the
mag a good ole spin from the bottom. If you yell out loud in agony and
surprise, and throw the mag 10 feet up into the air, the coil is
probably not the problem either. Smile

BINGO!!!! Glad you found the cigarette to be the problem. FWIW, not an uncommon problem.
