Points all well-taken, Ron. But don't be surprised if the warning label isn't changed to say, "Warning: this aircraft is amateur built and does not comply with federal safety regualtions. As far as we know, it is being maintained and tinkered with by persons not involved in its construction and about whose qualifications the FAA has no knowledge whatsoever, whose work is inspected just once a year."

I'd be for such a change, and the people who engrave aircraft placards would probably be gladdened as well Wink

This has parallels in medicine, where we are now treated to Black Box Warnings with dire pronouncements like, "This medication, while shown to help your ADHD kid sit still, may also be helping him form a plan to act on the suicidal impulses it has been shown to induce sometimes. Good luck, and keep an eye on him. We warned you." (I am paraphrasing, of course.)

This revelation about carte-blanche modification of experimentals by non-certificated individuals has both educated and disturbed me. My philosophy would be, "if you want to experiment with it, be the builder or become the A&P." Don't worry, though; I'm not likely to become the king of the world and get my way in such matters.

Have a good day. I consider the thread fairly-well covered by now, at least from my end.

OH! I didn't realize that was you, Bill! The N-Number did it for me.
Sorry for the confusion!
These "callsign" thing-a-majigs are SOOO CONFUSING! Is it the plane
or the pilot? Is it both? Does it depend?

Oh, and for the record, I call dibbs on "The High Road" for my
airplane's name. I'm going to paint the tail in my family tartan, and
have an airbrush guy put some sexist "highland wench" art on the nose.

What can I say? I'm a traditionalist! <grin>

Stormy, I know some people that should not build a airplane.... In other
words If these people built a plane things would be pretty scary. Now
because they successfully built a plane and got a airworthiness certificate,
to me that does not automatically make them more qualified than someone who
hasn't ever built a airplane.

Onto A&P mechanics.... I have friends that are A&P mechanics who work for
the airlines. Not to say all airline mechanics are the same, but some of
those guys I know Know nothing about General aviation... Small planes....
Small engines.... Etc... etc.... etc....

I have also ran across a few A&P mechanics that were just plain half-assed.
Not to mention some that are dishonest and will make logbook entrys that
really shouldn't be made, etc....

The bottom line is experimental aircraft are not the same as factory
certified aircraft. Experimental by nature means there is more risk
involved, this is why insurance is somewhat more over a simular certified
counterpart... this is the reasoning behind the placards.... this is the
reasoning behind the test phases....etc...

I think as a whole, Experimental aircraft can be and are safe. Even with
these lax rules.

Some of the appeal of experimental is that it is cheaper to own and easier
to maintain.

Nice idea for a name, Robbie. I've entertained hundreds of possibilities for mine over the years, but never painted anything on, so far. I'm thinking of "Rubbish" or possibly "Triacle" for now. That second one should get you Googling Wink

So far, though, the nose is devoid of art.

The callsign comes from my ability to jinx the wx for any event I plan to attend, e.g. Lakeland this weekend.

"A salve against some malady" is my attempt at a definition of
triacle after perusing the various (and quite limited) google
results. That reminds me of a local pharmacist who's license plate
(on his Porsche) reads "MYELAVIL"...

Perhaps some hillbilly witchdoctor has put a hex on you? My family
comes from Tellico Plains, TN and if your manse is similarly
ensconced, I wouldn't be surprised if you had a few living in the
immediate surroundings!

Sorry about Lakeland. Y'all have a good weekend anyway. I'm going to
the boat show in Myrtle Beach this weekend. My dad and I will be at
the in-water show at the new Grande Dunes marina on the waterway at
the north end of Myrtle Beach proper on Saturday morning. They have a
bunch of exhibits at the convention center too.

My understanding is that, in medieval lore, triacle was the fabled universal cure for everything. Perhaps it's similar to El Dorado and the Fountain of Youth.

MYELAVIL; I hear you Wink

We've got rednecks aplenty here, very similar to hillbillies... you can't swing a dead cat hereabouts without hittin' one.

Enjoy the boat show, and the time with your Dad - make that count.

re: Dad... We work together. He's the general manager and I'm the
assistant manager of our printing plant. Usually when he's out doing
something I have to be at the office covering and vicee-versee...
It's actually pretty rare that we get to do anything non-work related
together, although we've both started working out together in the
mornings which is a nice change. We did catch a few nice Striped Bass
off of Kitty Hawk over Christmas, too.

No one who hasn't experienced it will ever understand the stress that
gets placed on a relationship by working together.
I left back in '98 and only came back to work here in '03 after my
"entrepreneur experiment" (it's a REAL long, sad story! <grin>). By
that time I'd had a lot of the arrogance of youth beaten out of me
and dad was a lot more mellow, so we get along great now.

He's looking at retirement in a few years so I'm working my rear off
trying to prepare to be as good at his job as I am at mine...

He's promised to go flying with me when I get my plane built...

re: Rednecks. My mom just got back from the Appalachians. Her family
is from Tellico Plains, TN very near the NC/SC/TN corner. Eric
Rudolph territory.

I hope I get to hear your story sometime; we've all got one (or two or three).

I saw some of those difficulties coming a long way off and decided, after following very reluctantly and belatedly on the same career path as my Dad, not to continue my training in the same town where he was in practice, and not to join his group when I got finished. It was hard for alot of people to understand why I didn't take that opportunity when it came my way, but we're all glad now that he's retired and we are able to live in the country literally next door on the farm.
