I agree with Mark. The vertical inlet is better.

I have the older air / filter box that is at least 50% larger in area than the newer ones. It uses a K & N Filter that is about 5 1/2" Wide by about 12" long. It has a much less pressure drop across the filter than the smaller ones. The factory outlet was about in line horizontally with the carb so I used a piece of radiator hose to connect to the carb. The NAPA store let me browse thru the hoses until I found one that had just the right angle. When I attempted a take off the pressure differential at the high throttle setting collapsed the hose right at rotation speed. Lucky for me! The engine quit cold turkey and the prop stopped like you just switched it off. After sitting there trying to think about what had just happened it started right up and I taxied back to the hangar. Another few seconds and I would have been in the trees.

Please do not use a rubber hose on the inlet.
I changed to a fiberglass elbow that I fabricated and that helped some but not much

The best fix was when I plugged the outlet and came out near the top of the filter box and came down vertical to the carb. I also installed a divider in the fiberglass elbow. I believe that the Bing carb does not atomize the fuel evenly and we will continue to have problems. Seems like whatever we do is a compromise.
