Hi Carlos,
Yes, I believe you should always use a thimble on cable loops.
I wouldn't worry about the thimble being a little deformed. The point is to keep the wear from destroying the cable. The thimble takes the abuse that would otherwise start breaking cable strands.

Always use a thimble! You have to spread the thimble a little to get it through the eye of the pin but then gently squeeze back together with pliers after.
There is a really good article on swaging cables in Kit Planes magazine this month.

You are correct. Bending the thimble a little is necessary to get it into the eye. I try and pry the thimble open with a screw driver just enough to get it through the eye without bending it to much then I install the cable through it and swedge it. When crimping I keep the thimble from coming in direct contact with the nico press collar. Some people run them up tight together.

Another way to get the thimble through the little hole is to twist it so the ends are not facing each other. This allows you to insert it and then just twist it back.

Take a look in AC 43-13 and even in ACS catalog. They will show how and where it is done.

NJ has taken the next step. They are identifying cars with bad drivers. You will notice some cars with a large red "R" on them. That is to identify the drivers as "R"estricted. Restricted is just a polite way of saying Bad Drivers. Be cautious around them.

Another tip -- I honestly can't recall why, but my EAA tech adviser (Mel Asberry) told me to always clip off those sharp pointed tips on the thimble.

Good point Jay. You are correct. I was told this was to keep the thimble from binding against the nico press sleeve. I was also told to make sure to smooth the ends you cut with a file so there is no burrs to rub on the wire. Common sense really.

Yes, Jay:
The reason is if/when the cable flexes the eye ends do not cut/rub on the enter & exit cable. BUT! You also have to smooth the eye by fine wheel grinding.
