Anyone on the net aware of the extent of horizontal stab spar and elevator attachment points cracks?

Not exactly looking forward to doing those SBs if the incidence rate has been really low…..

I have completed the inspection and didn't find any cracks. Be aware that SB 14-02-03 was superseded by SB 14-02-05. recommended that it not be done as a preventative maintenance.

Hi Ya Grumpy,

All you have to do is remove the fairing at the tailplane to inspect the stab main spar area. The elevators/rudder inspection does not require removal of anything.

If no cracks are found then you must do nothing except inspect each year. If cracks are found then the rectification must be made.

Be sure to check the Jam Nuts on the rod ends. ( seems that loose jam nuts can cause the problem)

Cheers .... Alan. RV8 Flying in Australia.

I just finished doing both insp's on the elevator and horz stab and found nothing wrong.

I look at the back end carefully every year as I had a Swift that was known for cracks back there.

It would be nice to have an account of how many a/c have been insp vs how many have found cracks and what type of operating environment they have been in.

Any thoughts how we could do that?

Just inspected my circa 1994 RV-6 for both the stab spar and elevator spar cracks per the respective SB's and found nothing questionable. Whew.

Are the numbers being reported to Van’s and will Van’s report the numbers found?

But that's probably a pretty high percentage of "cracks found" because its more likely that someone finding a crack would report it to Van's than someone not finding a crack. 10% seems crazy high especially considering that it took this long to "discover".

Seems like everyone should report their findings to Van's good or bad so that their stats are realistic.

Just send them to "support(at)vansaircraft". Included my N number and Serial number.
