Hi Steve.

While I am currently building a Lightning, I have previously built and fly a Lancair ES.  I used AAE antennae for 2 COMs and the Transponder.  This was despite advice fro other Lancar builders not to do it.

Well, I have since added a Comant belly antenna for COM1 and a traditional blade on the belly for the transponder. I still have COM2 in the tail with the AAE. There is a noticeable decrease in performance with the AAE, both in the COM and the transponder.

Belly antenna going in the Lighting... ground planes in.

Good luck!

Steve,

I used three of them in my Lightning. The comm antenna and two of the small ones, one for the transponder and the other for ADS-B (maybe you don't have that in Australia). I mounted them all with sticky back velcro behind the rear bulk head per Mark at Lightning. The comm antenna needs to be as near vertical as possible and will curve around inside of the fuselage. I mounted one of the small ones on the opposite side of the fuselage and can't remember where I put the third one, but it is in the same vicinity, taking into consideration the instructions for proximity to avoid interference. They all work as advertised, although the comm antenna seems to be a bit directional on the ground. I always hear the tower, but occasionally don't hear other aircraft depending on which way I'm pointed. While in the air, there is no problem with the comm antenna being directional.

Kit #48, also a slow build, in the air for 6 months now.
