I am doing a survey and would like to know what others have as empty weight for their Lightnings. I would like to have actual 'as weighed' numbers as opposed to what the factory has put out. Please check your weight and balance papers and respond to this forum. My plane, that is very sparsely equipped, comes in at 40 lbs heavier than the factory advertisements. Either my scales (electronic) are way off or ???? Thanks to all.

Our first demo 323AL was 830lbs, single EFIS no AP wood prop ect. N324AL was 850 with dual EFIS, AP, long wings ect. Generally around 820lbs very basic, to 900 loaded with everything. Our scales are digital racing scales and we weigh the planes in full dress with oil and no fuel. Have posted several PICs on FB of them on scales. The heaviest yet was the XS with the lycoming O320 and it was 1013 lbs.
The planes with the EAB gear are lighter, the wide track gear weighs 13lbs more, Carbon props are about 5lbs heavier than wood. The interiors from B&B Are extremely nice but are heavy as well. steps weigh 3lbs a side.
Over the years from the early SN to newer ones the airframes lost weight. The fuselages used to weigh around 115lbs now they are about 105lbs, wing panels were about 90lbs and now around 75lbs. Same win small parts ect. We have changed cores resins and layup schedules to produce lighter parts while retaining strength.
It seems the biggest weight gain is the advancement in avionics and all the stuff you can stick in a plane.

George
My factory built lightning when checked at Gregg Hobbs place weighed slightly more than 900 Lbs. dry empty weight.  That was with the MK 2 tail feathers and fairings.  I would give you an exact weight but the data is at the hanger and some distance away from my home.

Hi,

My D-ELIY was propably the Heavyweight Champion!
The precision scales provided by my Examiner showed 410kg / 903lbs empty
incl. unusable fuel. Apparently the result of a very generous car
painter`s paintjob. White, then design, then clear coat.

D-EGFL will be somewhat better, although not lighter, of course, due to
the increased weight of ULP.390 engine and steel gear legs. But a friend
has spent hours of hard work to sand off about 40lbs of Gelcoat, and
the painter was reminded to keep the paint thin.
If I can keep it under 425kg /935lbs empty I`m happy. MTOW will be
700kg/ 1540lbs.

Thanks to all who responded.
My EAB jet empty weight is 895 which was strangely high because my friend with
a factory LS-1 has empty wt of 840 and has considerably more equipment (avionics
and autopilot) than mine. This 895 number is the same as original wt of plane
when equipped with a BRS chute.
I weighed with zero fuel on fancy electronic racing scales. Nick- this after chute
removed. My new LSA wing tips are heavier and we put on the steps, B&B interior
(lighter than what was in place) plus grnd adjust prop, but I have minimum
avionics, and wide track gear.
I'm happy to see others are in the same ballpark.
Thanks again....George Andr...jet kit #11

Hi George

My kit is #65 and weighed in at 834lb (378kg) complete with engine oil and unusable fuel (I put some fuel in each tank then pumped them dry using the electric boost pump – carbi pipe leading to a bucket). It has the “speed kit”, good epoxy paint, leather seats and a Dynon 10” Skyview. For weight saving I did a LOT of surface smoothing and sanding before painting, sanded most of the primer off before the top coat, used very light weight cockpit & baggage area lining, and replaced all steel packing washers (spar box etc) with alloy blocks. I had to weigh mine 3 times using calibrated scales – rotating each scale under each wheel – to be confident of the weight. We have another Lightning at our club which is finished very much mike mine and it is 6kg lighter.

Hope that helps!
