Hi, Ron,

Great to get a lightning-speed reply from one of the real old-timers here on
the List! Thanks a lot for that link - yes, it is exactly the story the big
bad men at EAA wouldn't let me read!

In fact, in terms of historical interest and tracing the life line of that
engine that article is really a gem. I am enclosing the only picture I have
of Denney's original installation, reproduced from the "10-years-Jubilee"
edition of "Kitfox Times" published in 1994. The design differences between
the two are enormous: Version 1 (the one shown in the photos accompanying
the "Sport Aviaton" article and displayed at EAA Ultralight in 1984) seems
to be the original Pond design. It apparently had a separate camshaft for
each of the cylinders. Version 2 however (fitted to the first Kitfox the
same year!) corresponds to what was patented in 1992. It displays a total
redesign with different housings, cylinders and heads, plus a new valve
train with just two single cams, one for all the inlet valves, another for
all outlet valves.

I'm sure at least some List members might be interested in these historical
details so I'm adding a few more bits from my recent discoveries.

Bill Sadler, the designer of the Vampire twin-tailed Ultralight, bought the
rights to the Pond engine, did the redesign, applied for patent in 1990 and
had the patent issued in 1992 - see here:

&RS=PN/5150670

In 1997 the project was for sale once again:

.. and after some more years of lumbering along the baby reappeared at
Oshkosh 2012, presented by the man who moved the entire project to China:

Finally, if you can read Russian (no, I can't, but I'm on good terms with
Google Translator!) here's some more info, including the latest photos plus
some details about what seems to be preparations for actual production in
China:
http://www.reaa.ru/cgi-bin/yabbA/YaBB.pl?num=1298623014/all (and I was
totally surprised to find out AOPA does indeed have a branch in Russia!)

Whover may read this - please don't hesitate to tell me if you liked it!

Kind regards,

Johannes

Johannes,

It’s great to see you back on the list and researching the history of Denny’s work. It’s certainly interesting.
My only comment, and this is as a long time Kitfox owner, List friend and EAA Member dating back to nearly the beginning and also as the current Chairman of the EAA Homebuilt Aircraft Council, and member of the EAA Board Directors. I think it’s great that the history provided on the EAA website provides the ability for many of us to do the research we enjoy. This is all made possible by the dues the members pay as well as the sponsors at AirVenture/Oshkosh. Without them there wouldn’t be a website - or EAA. It’s not a public website, it’s for the dues paying members. It hurts that we would be thought of as the bad men at EAA for allowing only our dues paying members access to their funded resources. If everyone had free access to all that EAA offered, why would anyone pay dues? Eventually EAA would be forced to shutdown for lack of funding and then no one would have the resources you and I and others find so valuable. I’m sorry if this comes across as harsh as I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone, but being referred to as the badmen at EAA just struck me as off target. I would like to personally invite you to join EAA and then you would have unfettered access to all we have to offer. Your writings could possibly be included in the Experimenter or Sport Aviation so all EAA members could appreciate the fine work you’re doing.

Hey Johannes,

No admonishment necessary, just wish you could be part of the EAA family again. There are other things to do in EAA other than flying; reading, researching, and writing being a few of the most fun. You should give it a try for a year and see how it works out for you.
We’d love to have you back, but if not, it’s nice to see your listings on the Kitfox list again.
Cheers,
Rick

[quote] Hi, Rick,

As I said it's good to hear again from old friends and so please accept my sincerest apologies for having hurt your feelings. My remark about "... the bad men at EAA..." was meant purely in a joking spirit. In fact I was a member of EAA for many years but I canceled my membership after I had stopped flying. I still have my old membership card but I thought it silly to try to "break the doors" by using it.... though I'm sure the EAA's computer system would have blocked me anyway.

Admonish me for having given up my membership years ago and you'd be right! Smile

Best wishes,

Johannes
