Listers,

With the advent of the “monitor standby” feature on many modern radios, are folks still installing two panel-mounted radios or sticking with one plus a handheld backup? Used to be we had to tell ATC we’d be “off freq for one, monitor Guard, report back up” to listen to ATIS. No longer.

Plan is for basic IFR: single VOR/LOC/GS, GPS, thinking G3X PFDs (10 inch and/or 7 inch), maybe a Garmin combo GPS/NAV/COM. The RV-8 panel is a bit small, and saving space is becoming a necessity as the layout matures.

Is there a pressing need for that second COM?

Yes - I offer that for an IFR plane a second radio should be part of the panel. I have the Garmin GTN-650 for Comm #1 and the Dynon radio for Comm #2. Performance wise the Dynon works just as well as the GTN-650. The Dynon radio itself is mounted behind the panel with just a small control head on the panel. If you have the Dynon SkyView EFIS the radio is integrated into the EFIS so freqs are automatically uploaded.
We just did a panel upgrade for my old RV-8A using a single 10" SkyView EFIS with a stand alone Dynon D10A as the backup. All fit well on the panel - even with adding an airspeed and altimeter steam gauges.

I agree, for IFR, a second radio is important for redundancy and picking up ATIS. With the monitor function, on a busy channel, trying to get the ATIS gets blocked by transmissions on the active freq.

Any chance you can upload pictures? I have a garmin stack and dynon d-100 d-120 and am thinking of upgrading to sky view for ads-b compliance and ads-b display.

Here is a picture of the RV-8A panel that was installed in Carl’s plane:

Major issue was depth of radios, but this was able to be worked out.

I am quite comfortable using one radio. The monitor freq is usable, but does get stepped on by ATC. You can still do the "old fashioned" technique of requesting off freq for a minute.
Better yet, why not use Foreflight (or other similar software suite) on an iPad (or similar device) combined with a Stratus (or other suitable antenna) and you have ATIS available all the time along with TAF, approach plates, taxi diagrams, fuel prices, FBO phone numbers, etc. Not to mention nearly real time radar. I have easily navigated around rain and storms using only the iPad.
With those assets, I am very comfortable with a single radio. I simply follow the NORDO procedures if the comm totally dies. Or I use my handheld which can plug into the external antenna by interrupting the ship's radio coax.
For me, more important than a second radio is a second (or third) EFIS. Personally, I like the G3X as primary coupled to autopilot (I think that is very important for single pilot IFR in a RV-Cool and an Advanced Flight Systems (or other suitable EFIS) backup. In my RV-8A (the world's fastest RV-8A) I have the primary EFIS and the AFS EFIS as an engine monitor. If the primary EFIS fails I can change the AFS display from engine monitor to PFD or PFD/map.
For me, single radio is fine - I'm a little old fashioned that way.
If you have the cash and panel real estate, then a second ship's radio would be nice. Maybe something small for the panel such as a Becker or similar. You'll need two antenna. Could put one in the wingtip.
