I would like to remind everyone (Lightning flyers, Lightning builders, and anyone else interested in this fantastic aircraft) that this year's Lightning Homecoming and Fly-In is rapidly approaching. I hope you already have your calendar marked for the weekend of 2, 3 & 4 October, but if not, please put this on your "Must do" schedule. It is always a great event.

Most people plan to arrive at the Lightning hangar facility (the northern most hangar at the Shelbyville, Tennessee Airport - KSYI) on Friday afternoon to attend the evening activities in the Arion hangar. Fun things planned include demo flights for potential customers, a cookout with beverage of your choice (Nick, being from Wisconsin, prefers beer, but he does drink Wisconsinably). There will also be other activities to participate in such as "hangar talk" (or bragging about how fast your "jet" is), Giant Jenga games, and maybe even a creeper race if any NASCAR fans are present. Bring your racing creeper.

Weather permitting Saturday morning will be a fly-out to an EAA chapter breakfast at a nearby airport (we will try to have Lightning seats available for those who drive to SYI). When we get back to Shelbyville, we will brief and then run the 2016 Lightning Air Race Classic which will again feature races for both the Light Sport and the "Go Fast" aircraft. These races are a timed event and are run with takeoff time delays so that no actual passes are expected around the navigation course - unless of course someone gets lost or misses a turn point. There will be two awards for each class - the overall Top Speed in each class, and the Navigational "Fred Noonan" Award for the participant who can best predict their speed, time, and fuel burn for the event. If you win you will also have bragging rights for the next year, and will probably get your photo in the next Lightning Newsletter - "Hangar Talk". Now that is exciting!

Saturday afternoon will feature additional demo flights and various briefings on the Lightning (recent updates and future plans) and Lightning engine briefings. Saturday evening will feature a dinner for all attendees at a nearby restaurant facility. Sunday morning is usually when those that flew in will depart for their home airport.

As you can see, this really is a fun event for all Lightning enthusiast. Please make every effort to attend. You will be glad you did.

Blue Skies,
Buz Rich
