Hi Matt. My O-360 in my Tiger turns around 2300 on the takeoff run. If I check fuel flow at liftoff and immediately after I show about 17.5 gph on my JPI. During climb out since I am at or below 75% power I will lean it back down to about 14 gallons per hour. EGT and CHT numbers look really nice and low.

Subject: Lycoming O-360 Fuel Flow Rate

I'm still chasing down this weird problem with low fuel flow rates on the RV-6.
I've replaced the mechanical fuel pump and got a rebuilt 4-5 carburetor, both
of which were well over do for replacement/overhaul anyway.  I haven't put the
cowling back on yet, but I did a static run up to about 2350-2400 and am seeing
about 9gph, which seems low to me?

I pulled the fuel line off the carburetor and turned the electric fuel pump on
and saw about 21 GPH flow.  Is that considered "normal" or too low?

Thanks for the feedback,

Matt

You didn't say what your normal static RPM is for the engine/prop
combination you have but:

Are you sure your mixture control is going full rich when firewalled? Push
in full rich, disconnect from mixture lever and see if there is more travel
left. There is a mixture stop adjustment/assembly/parts on M/S family carbs.

"IF" it still has travel left, it is working as rigged, just not as you
would like.

Lycoming publishes expected fuel flow in the engine operations manual for
your particular model, but it seems if that 2400 RPM is full throttle/Full
mixture on your O-360/prop combo, it is low, very low. Something more like
76 lbs/hour at best power mixture which is like 12.5 gals/hour. If you
really are only using 9 gph (at) 2400 you are making like 110 BHP instead of
170+.

I wouldn't try taking off like that.

You didn't say what manifold pressure or density altitude was but for sea l
evel to 3000ft at WOT 2400 rpm a 180 hp 360 should make about 130-140 Hp an
d fuel flow is roughly 0.075 - 0.08 gph per Hp. FAA regulations (23.955) re
quire 125% of 100% takeoff power fuel flow. 180 Hp * 0.08 gph = 24.4. 14.
4 * 1.25 = 18 gph so your fuel flow sounds sufficient.
The fuel flow curves for Lycoming 180 Hp OI-360 shows 135 Hp is about 10.6
gph give or take depending on mixture.
