Hi All,

I have the steerable nosewheel with the bearing pre-load adjusted with
bellville washers. I did not receive any of theses washers with my kit
and on approaching Matco they informed me that they did not supply the
washers and would not recommend this method of pre-load adjustment. The
axle is 3/4 inch and you can see the installation on Bob Reed's site in
the manual section.

Any recommendations on where I go from here?

Thanks

Mike

Hello Mike, You wrote:

So what did they recommend?

2) "Any recommendations on where I go from here?"

a) Why not go with flat nylon washers instead of the Belleville washers for
your bearing preload?

b) You may be able to obtain washers of the exact dimensions needed from on
line sources such as

http://www.mcmaster.com/#nylon-flat-washers/=130xnsi

or from a good hardware store.

c) If none of those sources work for you it is possible to buy nylon sheet
in various thicknesses:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-nylon-sheets/=130xra3

and with clever use of hole saws and a drill press create just about any
washer ID and OD that
you need.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

OC

Hello OC,

This is the reply that I received from Matco, thanks for you help.

I am not aware of Bellville springs for the axle ever being part of
MATCO
mfg wheels. It was likely something that the HIS folks used. The idea
is
to have preload on the bearings which is reqyired. I'm not sure how
well
that will work.

We have an axle, used on VANS aircraft, that provides the preload and
the
column support of the fork separately. It is shown at:

http://www.matcomfg.com/SPACERAXLE24KIT-idv-3681-44.html

This is for a 1.25 inch wheel but it gives you the idea.

Mike,
Also be careful with the direction of bolt/axle  for the the wheel..
It can go from the left to right or it can go the other way..
Depending on direction of the bolt it can tighten or loose the bearings in case of jam in one or both of the bearings.
If it tightens it will immobilize the wheel and break back the front gear leg.
Impossible? It happened to my while taxing.. Resulted in broken front gear leg and broken propeller.
If it happened while landing or on take off it would be far worse.
