My flying buddies joke about my “machine shop in the baggage area”. Of course one has had more emergencies with his aircraft in the last six months than I have had in 52 years as a pilot.
I carry a 40# tool box with enough tools to do any job on the aircraft except overhaul the engine and about 10# of spare parts in another box. The tool box contains spare fasteners as well. The spare parts include extra CBs, alternator belt, two tube types, extra brake shoes with pads, spare O rings, etc. Because most of the items on our aircraft do not have “continued airworthiness instructions”, many larger FBOs are prohibited from working on them by their maintenance insurance carrier. At the big FBO at Austin I was told by an employee (in tuxedo, while I stood there in Bermuda shorts) that “we cannot work on your aircraft sir, but you may use our hangar and tools as you wish”. In the Austin case I repaired a minor problem on my Glastar outside their hangar with tools and fasteners from my onboard box.
At least a small tool box and a few spare parts may someday speed you on your way.
