Holy cow! This is on an RV-10? If so I've never heard of that on
an RV-10 until now. Can you verify that it was or wasn't?

I thought he was covering the SB for nose gear mount issue, Although I though Vic was the one that caught it. Is this different?

Yes it was on my -10.
First thing people say is, "Land it hard on the nose!"??
NOT! It was pretty obvious that it was a crappy weld. Fillet was too small and the heat didn't penetrate very well.
The nose strut folded back under and came into the firewall just missing my foot by 1/4".
Went thru the tunnel taking out both electric fuel pumps and even cracked open the engine mounted fuel pump. Lucky I didn't have a big fire. Tore up the engine mount pretty well.
We couldn't find anybody in the greater south that would repair it. AIG then said they would let me repair it. It took about a year and a lot of hard work. The engine went back to Barrett (only had 38 hrs). The best thing I guess was a composite MT prop and an idling engine.
Vans asked me to send the strut to them. They kinda hemmed and hawed around and I let it drop since AIG was being good to me.

Very interesting indeed! So the failure was up in where the strut
connects to the shock doughnuts? Or it was a weld down towards the
nose wheel? I can picture the gear leg folding back under the plane
and that would only happen I'd think if it was up at the shock
mounts that it failed. What a story! Well, glad it came out for
you OK. I sure hope Van's looked fully into it and knows
if there is a chance it would affect anyone else. With all the
parts powdercoated I don't know that any builder would ever find
such a defect until it broke. And this is the first time I've heard
of such a failure. I guess it's one people should be aware of
and we can track it as a group if it happens again.

Very cool that I stopped at your airport for fuel. You just never
know who you'll meet. I try to go where the fuel price is good. Smile

No it broke where the nose gear strut is welded to the nose wheel. I always (still do) thought that it was a potentially weak spot mechanically speaking. I had to replace pretty everything back thru the firewall to the leading wing spar on the sides and bottom of the fuselage.
