Looking for a panel blank for the CJ front panel. Also, if anybody has CAD files for the panel or any of the stock instruments, please contact me.

While we're on the subject of panels... I'm planning to pull my front panel for repaint over the Holidays. Anyone got any advice? JB

Hi,
just made a new instrument panel for my Yak52 to cover all the unused holes. My scanner was too small, so I took a picture of the panel and used it as a backdrop to draw the new panel in vector format. The original instruments are very easy to measure and draw, you can find templates for western instruments on the web. Draw one and copy/paste most of them.
I installed a GRT Mini, since the original horizont was missing.
Had the panel cut on a waterjet including all screw holes.
Using ie. Illustrator or a CAD programm, whatever you like. The waterjet needs a DXF. Just a few hours of work if you start from scratch.
Picture shows work in progress, center main panel is new. I am considering moving to new torx screws, the original russian ones are hard to find, esp. new.
Used std spray paint. A more durable paint would be nice, anybody out there with powder coating ? How does it look after some time ?

WRT painting... Several years ago, I used a spray can of pick up truck bed liner (black) on my C172 panel. I liked the textured look and durability. Saw the old airplane a couple years ago and the panel still looks great after 20 years. Planning to remove the panel in my CJ this winter and anticipate doing the same unless someone here presents a better idea. JB

Ordinary spray 1 step is the cheapest way but will scratch easily. You could use a 2 part epoxy system spray on product. I had mine powder coated. It make for a very hard and beautiful surface. One draw back. Many panels are part of the grounding for the electrical system and items that may need a ground on the panel. I had a problem where my gear lights were not working. The grounding turned out to be though the mounting screws of the gear light assembly. After I ran a drill bit though the mounting holes, to break the powder coating (it was acting as an insulator) they started working fine. You may find that with a 2 part epoxy system also.

I covered the step sheet along the left wing of my old CJ with truck bed liner and it worked great and lasted forever.
