I bought an older, says Mark 8, compass, WW2 navy era?
Anyway I checked it against our sight compass at work and it works great!

The only problem is that the liquid has become dark and the lettering is also very dark.

What would be involved in refurbishing this thing? Do I need to send this in somewhere, or would it is possible to replace the liquid and clean up the lettering?

If this is the sperry (bulkhead mount) compass of which you speak, the dial will be painted in radium paint, which does "fade" but is still poisonous (radioactive). (Pretty much most to all of the instruments of this era will be radium painted.)
I have replaced "dirty" compass fluid with the best kerosene I could find (not lamp oil) but was informed once by a service tech that the reason for the discolouration is from the seals breaking down. I always assumed it was from the paint. I have never had a leak but I would not rely on one of my collectibles as a primary instrument. But, Hey. Get a removable phone mount and use your iPhone for that.
The story of the girls who worked in factories during WWII painting radium dials is interesting. They were told it was safe and used to lick their brushes, as per training, to get a good point. A goodly number of them lost their jaws, etc. to cancer. No claims were ever paid out as I recall.
There are instrument makers who will be happy to repair the unit for the price of a mortgage payment. I had a watchmaker who painted dials for me (now passed on) but I never wanted to disassemble a liquid filled instrument for fear of not ever being able to seal it back up.

Anything is possible! This is Experimental Aviation. Look the thing up online and perhaps you can find a good description of an overhaul!

First can you get Seals? Or can you make them?
The famous 'Whisky" in these old compasses is usually a really pure kerosene. So you will need paint that will resist kerosene.
I have an old Carwil compass that became the early Airpath compass. To adjust the heading you have to place magnetized needles in little slots on the compass. Really strange. I got it up and working but now have a small leak, guess it is time to replace the seals. Luckily they are just like the airpath Seals.

I thought that radium paint also ment glow in the dark?
This doesn't glow.

In any case it is a panel mount, and I got it for pretty inexpensive.
I love it though for the large dial in there!

Instrument Pro in California does a great job with restoring older instruments. Kurt Steklis is a magician! His email is instrumentpro(at)yahoo.com
Tell him we sent you - he's already done a handful of instruments for us with our Camel project
