Recently a 300 hour since (Chinese) overhaul HS6 failed in flight..

It commenced with inflight high vibes , the pilot reported oil/fuel px and other indications normal but declared a mayday and RTB'd,
Lucky to get it on the ground pretty quickly where the engine stopped running after landing...

Having not yet boroscoped it, the engine has very little compression on pulling the prop through a heap of rotations ( all 9 cylinders ) and will not rotate on the air starter more than 30 -60 degrees... indicating similar to sticky valves etc.?

Pulling the plugs has revealed small particles/flecks of aluminium looking material on at least a few that I have pulled...

Can anyone shed any light as to possible reasons that might have occurred in the past to affect all nine cylinders?

Impeller failure/due elastomer wear, bearing/shaft failure etc that might affect all 9 pots with metal in the intake system.

The carby /intake system doesn't appear to have allowed any thing to be ingested.

New engine going in shortly but wondering what it might have been before pulling it apart more....

cheers,
Matt

It had heaps of oil pour out the coarse filter when I opened it .. looking for bits of metal - but nothing obvious caught in it. So serious internal failure not evident in the oil so far ...prop turns over by hand easily with no binding etc
But no , not actually looked in oil tank to confirm loss of oil being a source ..
Thsnks 😀

You have had a failure in the accessory section.

Sent from my iPad from some where on The 3rd rock from the Sun.

Does any one know if the rear accessory case simply comes away from the intermediate case on a HS6 , or does it have to be pulled down / aft securing bolt removed to detach it ? The manuals indicate the drive shaft for the accessories might slide over the end of the crankshaft output and not rigidly fixed - allowing removal in one piece ? Or... not !

Still working on finding out what let go inside mine ... have found some larger chunks of non ferrous bits when looking down a few intake tubes ..

If it is like the M14, it a spline drive. Crack the case and slide straight apart.

Thanks ! That sounds like a good design concept for ease of replacement.!
Also. How hard is cylinder over haul ( just lapping valve seats and honing - to hopefully restore the valve sealing after the fine particles from the supercharger got in there ...

Yes, the accessory drive will come off the engine without needing to remove the oil tank. You'll need to bend the air start pipes a bit but it is possible.

Metal in the intake tubes sounds like something has come adrift in the supercharger.......That's going to be messy.....

Good Luck
