Folks,

I need to select fuse blocks for my plane, less than 20 circuits. I found the Littelfuse POWR-BLOCK on Digi-Key and it looks cool but I have to order a zillion pieces to make a complete set of stuff that is ready to go into the plane: fuse blocks, interlocks, mounts, terminals.
Is there an easier way? Something off-the-shelf and maybe available locally? Or should I carefully get together all of the parts that I need and order the POWR-BLOCK from Digi-Key.
Thanks,

There is something simpler. See www.bandc.aero, look under electrical supplies/circuit protection devices/fuse blocks. A 20 circuit block ready to use is $30.
Good luck/

Something like this can fit right on your panel
http://www.cooperindustries.com/content/public/en/bussmann/transportation/products/power_distribution/fuse_panels/series_15710_rearterminalatcfusepanel.html

Or do a google images search for “ATC fuse blocks” and you’ll see many other styles. Some are available at auto parts stores. I have used the 20 gang version
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Bussmann-15600-18-20-18-Position-ATC-Fuse-Panel-Block-RV-Trailer-Boat-Solar/272378729318

and also used 12 gang and 8 gang models to set up a main and essential bus.

With the 20 position version, it is also possible to cut the center conductor, silver soldered a extra tab on the end and made a main/essential bus out set up out of it.

That's what I used and here are some pics of the mounting.  I have a Z-14 design (2 batts, buses, alts) so each fuse block is on a different side.  I should have just put 2 big ones in - handy for loading balancing later when the truth becomes evident.

Fuse Blocks - Mounted

I ordered my interior side panel with 2 cutouts and used a piece of lexan with hook&loop to cover over it.  There's enough room to number fuses on the fuse block.

I purchased a Busman 14 fuse block. I did not like the density (fuses too far apart), the way the terminals protruded from the sides taking up panel space, and the way that the fuse sockets grip the fuses (weak grip).
So I made my own fuse block using a PCB and fuse clips. Search the web for "Keystone 3522".
My fuse holder has 18 fuses, 2 of which are spares. The wires exit straight out the back. The 8 small screws define the perimeter of the fuse block behind the panel. My rule is to never replace a fuse while flying and never with the master switch turned on. The fuse block is mounted in the lower right hand corner of the instrument panel in front of the passenger. The fuses glow when blown, except the 2 amp. Vans sells the glow fuses.

Hi Joe,

Most interesting, congratulations !
I wish I could see the back of your fuseblock !
What did you use for the bus itself ? Metal strip, solid wire ?
Did you use Faston tabs to attach the wires ?

I purchased the fuse blocks linked below. The electrical connections are mounted from the rear. The blocks also come with a plastic cover to shield the fuses. This comes in very handy if you decide to mount the fuse block horizontally. I can supply photos of how I mounted them in my RV-8A

Here you go Gilles, a picture of the rear of the fuse block. Do not let the reflection in the aluminum confuse. In the reflection, the wires can be seen making a 180 degree turn before being soldered to the PCB. No worry about stiff soldered wires breaking because they are no longer stiff where exiting through the holes in the board. The top 3 rows are one continuous copper PCB layer on both sides of the board. The solder mask hides the copper. The top 3 rows really are continuous. The main power bus is nothing more than the copper layers on the circuit board. I had considered soldering a 6 inch long #14 or #12 AWG wire along the bus to increase its capacity. I did not because my RV-12 only uses about 10 amps total. The #12 wire from the aircraft battery contactor is spliced to 4 each of 18 AWG wires that are soldered to the top row of the bus. The alternator (dynamo) is similarly connected with 4 of 18 AWG wires to the bottom of a 30 amp fuse (back fed to the bus). This fuse block has about an hour of Hobbs time. So far no problems.

If you're building a custom power distribution
center, consider the miniature ANL current
limiters like these . . . much smaller
and readily available.

Hello Bob,

Great find, thank you !
I imagine it is possible to solder screws through an extra thick PCB to hold those ANLs.
Thanks again,
