Hi
I want to change a reduction gearbox on a cj6 engine. Has anybody done this and if so how difficult would it be.

Hi Walt
My current engine crankcase developed a crack.
I have an spare engine that i can replace it with that had a prop strike with a hanger door.
I have been told that I can use that engine but would just feel better if I replace the gearbox

My strong advice is that the gearbox should be shock-load tested after
anything more than a very moderate ground-strike – and this is particularly
true with the metal propeller.

I agree with you Richard that is why I would rather want to change out the gearbox of the engine that had the prop strike.
Just wanted to know if it is a big job and if there is anything I need to be on the look out for.

I can only speak for the Russian engines, but I have little doubt that the
Chinese engines, although many parts are different, are in practical terms
extremely similar, and from that point of view, changing the gearbox is
extremely simple.

For what it is worth, the Russian mechanics, and the Russian trained mechanics of the M-14 family that I have spoken with have told me to also check the timing on the engine after a prop strike. Look for even the smallest amount of change. This due to the fact that on the M-14, the accessory drive shaft is very easy to "twist" due to the fact that it is spinning a lot of mass, and a sudden jerk can cause the shaft to twist thus changing the timing. I don't know about the Housai but I suspect it is the same design. If the timing has changed at all, a major inspection is called for.

Mark is absolutely correct – it is critical to check the magneto timing very
carefully after a ground-strike, since this will provide a very clear
indication of torsional damage to the supercharger drive. But what is most
likely to suffer are the satellite gears in the gearbox, so these really
should be crack tested.

I have now replaced the gearbox. All timing were checked but on start the prop turns very slowly even with 45-50 pressure in system.
Turning the prop by hand feels ok.
If the pressure drops below 30 the prop does not turn.
Any ideas..
