Wing root fairing ideas (for speed)?

So, after 20 years of flying our Glasair I + I/II (short Glasair 2 fuselage on a Glasair I wing), I've noticed that we don't get any bugs on the inside half of the horizontal stabilizer.

The bug line is coincident with a tangent from the widest part of the fuselage back to the horizontal stabilizer. This makes me think that I'm carrying a big wake aft of the wing/fuse intersection.

I saw a Glasair 1 guy's ad on Barnstormers where he had added a custom wing root fairing and claimed a 25 mph increase in speed. (That was an RG with 200 hp. And a narrower Glasair 1.) So I'm thinking of rolling my own.

There seem to be two approaches to cleaning up the airflow back there. The less intense version is to drop a vertical from about half way up the fuselage to the wing (to straighten out the fuselage) and then figure out how to fair the part after of the flap. (Usually with a horizontal fence after of the flap.)

The other version is to make a Spitfire type fairing, a longish, curved fairing that goes to a large radius as it goes back. (To keep the airflow attached to both fuse and wing.)

So far I'm opting for the Spitfire version.

Here's a link to a photo of my first try.

But I thought I would ask you all if anyone has a better/simpler idea before I try this for real.

(I'm surprised that Jeff LaVelle doesn't have an obvious wing root fairing on his Reno winning Glasair III.)

Mike, did you fly a tuft test to give you a visual on where separation takes place? Robin
