Etienne – since you decided to bring this into the public arena, I thought it appropriate that I should tell a wider audience as to exactly the background behind your accident. I think it is important to emphasise at the beginning that we have never actually seen your aeroplane, and only delivered a perfect and zero-timed PF engine to you a year before the accident.

Early this year, in very cold weather, you wrote saying that the propeller rpm was not stable and seem to vary. We thought it might be the very cold weather in which you are flying, but after further discussion sent you a new propeller governor.

Then, after a couple of months we understood that there was a likelihood of a fuel problem, with varying fuel pressure, which is what probably caused the rpm fluctuation in the beginning. Your engineers then dismantled large parts of the fuel system; made various modifications to the fuel unions, and indeed used significant amounts of "goo" hoping to improve the seal of these different unions which they had disturbed – of course an absolute "no-no".

It was then felt that the system was working well; you did a 10 minute ground test run, which again seemed good. So it was agreed that you would do a further 10 minute test on the ground and if that was still good then fly in the direct overhead of the airfield for a further 10 minutes. The second test run appear to be fine; you took off; flew for 10 minutes in the overhead and then, inexplicably, given that there was a potential problem with the engine, you flew away from the airfield. We understand that you began doing aerobatics, and at that stage you said that the "engine failed".

The countryside was flat and with reasonably large fields which should have made for an easy forced-landing – but only you know exactly what happened.

So I would like to re-emphasise that the engine had been running perfectly; there was a fuel system problem which was being investigated; this was recognised by your engineers; and you decided to fly away from the safety of the overhead of the airfield. There was never anything wrong with the engine itself.
