One thing I'd like to add. Engine thru bolts separating in the case is indeed a description of an engine failure. No doubt about it. HUGE! When the case comes apart, that's an engine failure! Glad you landed safely (!!!).

Running an airplane out of gas at which time the engine stops running is really not "an engine failure" per se. Neither is an engine that stops running due to lack of fuel because the carburetor is clogged with something that should not be in there.

My only point here is that the reader takes away a completely different "lesson learned" from your example where a major engine internal component failed, than from a perfectly good engine that stops running due to lack of fuel, caused by something that got into the carburetor.

And in my opinion, you are again 100% correct when you said that we could still trust our same engine shop to build us an engine again. In this case, the Aerometal shop mentioned in the original posting.
