Ok Gang, need to plumb the knowledge banks to track and fix a Nanchang air leak. Both main and emergency tanks leak down to 21 ATMs overnight with air valves closed. All pressures pump up and fill normally after start. No audible air leaks noted, first problem in 20 years of ownership. New Emergency tank was installed last month during annual...(note: old emergency tank would leak out completely overnight). Firewall check valves were replaced about 6 years ago, Doug Sapp stainless air valve put into main air valve maybe 5 years. Where to start?

I would start at firewall check valves next to start solenoid first. Inspect and re-build.

Skip,
I would go back to the check valves on the firewall firstsince both main
and emergency are leaking down. 5-6 years without a check valve problem
is excellent. But as we all know, they do not last indefinitely. Might
be a good idea to bite the bullet and rebuild all of them and be done
with it.

I have the same problem on our CJ, although it’s just the emergency tank that bleeds off to about 30 atmospheres after a week of sitting. In the past, overhauling the starboard firewall check valves solved the problem, but not now. So, it would seem that source of the slow leak could be the emergency shutoff valve, the emergency gauge or the air line serving both.

Because the emergency tank immediately recharges upon starting, I’ve been too lazy to pursue it, reasoning that I’ll deal with at annual. Shame on me.

The firewall check valves do not last forever! Yes the housing is fine and I suspect the spring might be also but inside these valves are also a round/flat rubber disc that can still go bad. Get a few rebuild kits from Doug and start with the check valves on right side of firewall above the starter solenoid. 6 years is a long time I believe between rebuild of the valves especially if your adding air tool oil or castor oil to your system. They can get gunked up and they are under a lot of pressure constantly.

Oh yes another thing, the seat in the main air valve I don't believe is stainless, just the pin. Again, these are old systems and a lot of gunk can gets floating around. It doesn't take much for something to get caught under a rubber disk in the check valves or under the seat of a shut-off valve.
