I'm wondering if anybody has installed a Jabiru with straight pipes. This weekend my muffler outlet fell off the plane while flying. I'd like to put straight pipes on it, but the foot wells might make it a little difficult to route them over board.

If some has straight pipes, would you contact me off line.

Rick,
I’ve installed them on one Europa. A bit noisy and snarly sounding but no detrimental affect that I could see other than they need to have a three to one to about a 1.25 inch pipe with slightly bent and shaped exit pipes to go between the foot wells. They are less fun if you run them down through the cowl bottom as getting the cowl on and off a trigear gets to be a pain.

I ended up putting the muffler back on this plane with a proper carb heat shield over the muffler. Reason was it was a bit quieter. The Sonex community has quite a few with the straight pipes as they can’t fit much in that cowl. Some builders have a full manifold made and throw the Jabiru pipes away. They also have some issues with exhaust leaks at the head as a solid pipe tends to hang pretty hard off those small 6mm bolts and getting the flange sealed and keeping it sealed after welding is a bit of a challenge as the pipes move during welding. I’ve only helped one Sonex with his 80 HP Jab/Sonex straight pipes and it is quieter than the 6 banger Zenith I helped with. The Zenith uses a Sonex supplied exhaust which had a transition pipe from the manifolds. The exhaust pipe fit is not very good at the 3 to one. I had to crimp the ends of the pipe and seal with Permatex Exhaust sealant. Later a better metal to metal seal was supplied by Zenith I think, may have been Jabiru.

Notes: I use that Permatex exhaust sealant now on the Europa older CKT exhaust without the nice round sockets for the muffler to pipe seal. It works for a couple of years on the CKTs.  Exhaust leaks on some of these down pipe to mufflers, must be sealed or many odd inflight problems occur due to exhaust jets hitting carbs, sensors, oil/cooler lines etc. On the Jabiru three to one, you may find it better to get it all fit then have it welded after getting the bends right.

If you have the welded Jabiru supplied muffler, I find them quite good. If you have the riveted one, it is pretty much a piece of junk. They leak badly and the Jabiru experimental community has had many issues. It is best to replace those junky ones and a straight pipe may be the best solution. Certainly lighter and the exhaust to head fit seems easier to get leak free if time is spent getting the angles right.

Best Regards,
Bud Yerly
