Can you TIG weld 4130 steel using stainless steel rod? I use mild steel rods when using OA to weld 4130 but don't know about TIG or using stainless steel rod for 4130.
The reason I ask is my son has access to his company's TIG welder but for some reason it is problematic to change the filler rod.

Thanks,
John Franklin

You can weld 4130 with stainless rod. 308 stainless alloy is used to weld dissimilar metals together. Although I don’t understand why you have to change the rod because you hold the rod in your hand as you TIG weld. Unless it is a very special welder that is using wire.

Jerry,

My son works for a company that supplies and repairs transducers used in refineries, so he and the TIG machine have to be "certified". Also he can't use the welding machine by himself for safety reasons. I think it does have a wire feed because most of their welding is done on very small, stainless transducers and transmitters.
It's just awkward for him to weld home projects but he can do it.

This welding project for me is my landing gear as I am converting it from bungee cords to the steel spring shown on WW's blog:
https://flycorvair.net/?s=spring+landing+gear

I could weld it with OA but it would look like crap! My son has welded small, non-structural pieces for me on my Aircamper but was a bit worried about this being the landing gear.

Thanks,
John F.
