Jamar Brake Cylinder

Where can I buy a Jamar brake cylinder and seals ? I don't see it on the Jamar website. 

I bought seals with pistons from CBPerformance, but that assembly is slightly longer and may block the connecting hole between the cylnders.  

I am filling the lines from the bottom up, but I have no pressure on one side. I never had this much trouble before.

Too be totally honest the Jamar cylinder isnâ€™t fit for purpose!!

Crap is a stronger word i would normally use but i donâ€™t want to upset

the gentile folk on this forum,

I have had three on my aircraft, the first one would lose a circuit when it wanted and had me of the runway twice, the second one wasnâ€™t much better

always loosing pressure but with no leaks, You could pump it up to get a hard

handle before landing,

the third one i completely strip, changed all the seals, honed the bores cleansed it to a inch of its life, bleed it for an hour using every means at my

disposal, ( considerably after 55 years in the motor trade) and i still wasnâ€™t happy with the pressure i was getting,

so bit the bullet and brought two matco cylinders and replaced the awful 

Jamar,

the Matco cylinders have been working fine now for Six years, I personally 

wouldnâ€™t take the chance with a Jamar, going off the runway can be 

decremental to your health

I am sure you are right. What is the Matco part number and how difficult is it to fit them  ?



I see apicture in the A.S. catalogue, but I don't see the attachment points

Carl,

 

  The Jamar brake is a steering part. See jamarperformance.com, steering products.

 

    It is a wheel steering for drifting and the like.

 

 

  New and rebuild kits are there.

Carl,

 

  Also,

 

  Pull the master and bench check.  I fill it completely, then check your rebuild.  

 

  Bleeding difficulty is often due to the small bleed hole.  

 

 

  My website has the bleed procedure.  If using silicone fluid or Dot 5, getting bubbles to move is a pain.  You have to pull the master out to bleed, hold one handle back etc.  Once bled they are quite firm.

 

 

  I thought going to Matco solved everything, but not so.  Brakes are a pain.  Even Matco masters can have issues with seals.  I had a brand new Matco constantly keep a bubble, and had to pull the master and rock it. George at Matco even commented that if installed  horizontal, they may require rocking to get a slick fluids bubble to clear. Nothing is easy or full proof it seems.

Bud is fully entitled to his views....but my first Jamar cylinder had seals that had a mixture of Buna-N and EPDM rubber, only useable if you had silicone 

fluid, the internal build quality is abysmal, If they had spent  more on that

then the external chrome plating it may have been more useful

that a chocolate teapot, Obviously this is my opinion,  

Karl i brought the Matco cylinders as a kit from Europa to replace the Jamar 

so cannot give you much more information except they were easy to fit

and bleed of air in five minutes flat,

After conversion from mono to trike i fitted another Matco in parallel to original with longer bolts and appropriate spacers and a alloy angle fitted outboard of the second Matco to the tunnel behind Matcos to prevent twisting when applying brake pressure. Worked perfectly for 4 years. Access for bleeding from cockpit.

I replaced the Janmar Brakes with Matco soon after I bought my aircraft

and have not for one minute regretted it..

Perhaps one, we had the same problem with DOT5 and bubbles until I questioned why the reservoir is high up on the firewall  So contrary to advice I filled up and forced fluid DOWN to the brakes,.....Bingo worked first time  That was 3 years ago and no bubbles or spongy brakes  They hold solid at 5000rpm in fine pitch

PS I think the original Janmar brakes were for go-carts

Many thanks for your inputs. It's comforting to know that this is a common problem.

I now recognize the parts on the Jamar website, but the cylinder is out of stock, and perhaps I don't need one anyway. I will have another go at bleeding, using your advice. My installation is good and simple, and I don't want to rush out and spend another few hundred dollars on Matco, if I can help it. Then there is the installation, at the airport, in 40 degree heat. etc

How did you force the fluid down, gravity, or pump ? Iguess it would work with one of the rubber adapters forced into the reservoir opening, the vent hole sealed, and the nipple open with a container to catch the fluid  ?

with compressed air from a large tire with the reservoir absolutely topped up It was a one hit solution for me!!

would have been nicer if the reservoir was a tad larger
